[h=1]Celtic were beaten by Juve - but they were let down by the referee. Big Daddy, Giant Haystacks and Mick McManus were all that was missing from this wrestling extravaganza[/h]
Celtic's Champions League dream lies in ruins after a 3-0 defeat by Juventus in the first leg of their last-16 tie but they were not helped by the referee. Celtic should have had a penalty for the blatant holding at corners which, had they converted, could have put a completely different perspective on the game.

Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenca chose to discipline Hoops striker Gary Hooper and Juve defender Stephan Lichtsteiner when clashes occurred and did so before the corner was taken, meaning a penalty could not be awarded.

That is a good way of letting players know you have seen the holding and blocking and will not tolerate it.

However, when it continues unabated, despite those yellow cards, you have a duty to increase the punishment. Some of it reminded me of the old ITV wrestling days.

So either red cards should have been shown or preferably at least one penalty awarded for the blatant holding. Celtic manager Neil Lennon had every right to feel hard done by.

Pud are you now accepting what many of us know for along time mental insanity.
I am told the most difficult part is admitting the problem. Your doctor should
Help you to contain this illness. But do yourself a favour don't be shouting at the
TV anymore. People will talk.
All the best Pud I hope you have a stable rest of the year.

I think many people would agree especially when the defender attempts to
Swap shirts in the midst of the action.
The problem is that we always seem to get a Spanish referee when playing an Italian
the big Countries look after each other. The only half soft penalty we have got in
Europe in over ten years was given by the Norwegian referee in the Moscow game .

Whereas you are not acting.[/QUOTE]

MD do you spend hours looking in the mirror, watching yourself for days on end?
Is that why you are so sure of your facts about Hooper?

referee ma arse, juve are more than 3 goals better than us, didnt deserve to get beat 3 nil on the night but thats football when you dont take your chances or get a bit of luck against a good team, especially if you are gifting goals in the first 2 minutes.

You are wasting your time pointing out Nev's ironic comments, he apparently does not see the contradiction in his stance on who posts what about who <ok>

Chris McLaughlin ‏@BBCchrismclaug
NL says Kris Commons overstepped the mark with comments about Efe Ambrose performance in Juve game. Says been dealt with internally.

i thought he was bang on the money. if ambrose was not 100% right then he should not have been on the park

Immediately after the draw for the last 16 of the CL Platini foolishly came out and said that Celtic had no chance of beating Juve. Now he has a right to his opinion, having played for Juve, however, he should never have come out with a public statement.

The officials would be well aware of this statement. Exactly what effect did this have on the thinking of the ref, even subconscientiously? Did he consider a second yellow or possible penalty when Brown was pulled around. I think it is possible that Lichsteiner would have got ah second yellow early in the game, but the ref might have hesitated and erred on what he considered the safe decision.

Whatever, Platini was wrong to make his statement with his experience, he must have been aware that a British Italian style clash could throw up a controversial decision or two.

A major error by Platini and the events have placed a shadow over his impartiality and possibly the influence he unintentionally has on officials.
