I just thought I would start a thread for this as none of knows if we will actually be playing CL football next season. It may serve to remind us of past glories should we ever drop out of the top four and finding ourselves wishing for elite football on European nights. I hope with all my heart that that will never happen. My favourite ever UCL matches from recent times are listed below. Feel free to add your own. I have also included the non-Arsenal games, the ones that deserve a place in history as the best ever matches (in my opinion of course). Favourite Arsenal matches ever: CL final vs Barca. Even though we lost, it was still a cracking game. To this day, I cannot watch it though. To have come so close and to lose it in the last ten minutes was heartbreaking. Beating Barca at the Emirates. One of the finest Arsenal performances of recent times. 'Nuff sed. Beating Real Madrid at Bernabeu. Our league form was shocking but we looked like true champions in this match. World class goal from Thierry Henry. Beating AC Milan at the San Siro. I remember Fabregas and co. really tore Milan to shreds that day. Adebayor also got on the scoresheet. Favourite non-Arsenal: Chelsea vs Barca 2nd leg, Camp Nou 2012. You have to applaud the character of the Chelsea players to come from 2-0 down with ten men against one of the greatest sides in the world. While Barca may not have been playing very well, this is an historic achievement for any side. I know if it were Arsenal we would still be talking about it to this day. A truly memorable match. Liverpool vs Milan, Istanbul. Needs no explanation really. What are your thoughts?
I think beating Madrid at the Bernabeau was one of my favourites. We were on a poor run of form but Thierry and Fabregas were both fantastic. We were also very very good in the win against Juve that Season. Beating Inter 5-1 away that glorious hatrick from Thierry.
How could I forget the Inter game We got spanked by them at home as well so the performance more than made up for it. Other honorable mentions include last season's Milan home game, 2-2 Barca game and the Liverpool quarter final in 2007/08 even though we lost.
Here is a video of the actual highlights from the game with Inter. http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/ggm-10-henry-inspires-5-1-win-over-inter-milan It's on Arsenal player.
A good game I agree but it is funny comparing 13 years of UCL to one year in the competition with a handful of games to choose from. Bale did well that night against inter, it's like he had rockets in his boots. My personal fave is the 5-1 demolition of inter Milan to turn over the aggregate score. I was going mad in front of the tele.
WHL . Bale scored a hattrick in the San Siro to get it back to 4-3 - which ensured we qualified on GD at the end, so great and vital performance, but we did lose that game. Beating AC Milan in the llast 16 in the San Siro was epic - although not as entertaining a game.
The performance against Milan at the San Siro was the best. It was the most accomplished, against the European champions. It wasn't like the 2-1 v Barcelona at our place, where we, in all honesty, sucka-punched them. It was proper dominance in the best match I have ever watched. Such quality in both teams and the run from Fabregas at the half way line and to shoot from what seemed an impossible distance. That game. Excuse me I've gotten a little excited.
the 2 games with you in 08/09, completely outplayed you in both and somehow in the 1st leg only managed to win 1 0, then 2nd leg Gibbs slipped which gifted us the 1st goal and then RVP fouled Ronaldo for that amazing free kick (wouldnt mind the reverse happening tonight), amd then you had that amazing counter attack goal which was miles better than Rooneys in 09/10 imo. non Man Utd games: Chelsea 4 4 Liverpool, Any Classico, Arsenal vs Barca
The greatest ever European cup game is often regarded as the 1960 final when Madrid beat Frankfurt 7-3
Has to be the 0-2 against Milan for me as well. It was the complete performance and we bossed a team that had players like Kaka,Pirlo and Seedorf in their rank. Fabregas was sensational and it was one of the best performances I have ever seen from an Arsenal player.
