Real deal: Nemanja Vidic warns Manchester United are out to prove a point in Madrid

    12 Feb 2013 22:30
Securing the Reds' first ever Champions League away win over the Spanish giants will ease embarrassment caused by last season's group-phase exit

Steaming in: Vidic says United "have a lot of things to prove"
    John Peters
Nemanja Vidic admits Manchester United are driven to beat Real Madrid on Wednesday because they have "something to prove".

Sir Alex Ferguson's men will take on Jose Mourinho's side at the Bernabeu in the knowledge that United have NEVER won away to Real in the European Cup/Champions League.

But Vidic admits he and his team-mates will be spurred on by last season's collapse, which sealed an embarrassingly early group-stage exit for the Old Trafford club.

The Serbian said: "We have a lot of things to prove. Last season, we were too confident in the group stage.

"We lost some points but we thought we were going to go through. The boss made it clear last season wasn't good enough. But we know that ourselves."

Speaking in the March edition of FourFourTwo, Vidic added: "You have to have a winning mentality if you play for Manchester United.

"When you have a season without trophies like last year it makes you realise that you have to improve. You have to learn from your mistakes.

"The approach this year has been different in the Champions League."

Vidic believes United will have to defend as a team if they are to keep out Cristiano Ronaldo.

He added: "We're going to have to play as a team. We need to get it right defensively and not concede as many goals in the first leg.

"You have to be solid. Not just at the back but all over the pitch. You have to have quality."

Real Madrid vs Manchester United: The story so far

    1957 European Cup semi-final

1st leg: Real Madrid 3-1 Manchester United
Goals: Rial (62), Di Stéfano (63), Mateos (83); Taylor (82)

2nd leg: Manchester United 2-2 Real Madrid (Agg 3-5)
    Goals: Taylor (62), Charlton (85); Kopa (25), Rial (33)

The first encounter between Real and United saw the Spanish side progress to a third straight European Cup final at the expense of the Busby Babes. The first leg in the Bernabeu was a brutal affair, with one paper's headline describing United's perceived harsh treatment as "Murder in Madrid". The return leg, the first European game to be played under floodlights at Old Trafford, ended in a draw, with Bobby Charlton scoring on his European debut, although United still went out over the two legs.

    1968 European Cup semi-final

1st leg: Manchester United 1-0 Real Madrid
    Goal: Best (36)

2nd leg: Real Madrid 3-3 Manchester United (Agg 3-4)
    Goals: Pirri (32), Gento (41), Amaro (45); Zoco (44 og), Sadler (73), Foulkes (78)

Ten years after the Munich air disaster had robbed them of eight of the Busby Babes, United travelled to Madrid for the second leg of the semi-final en route to winning the club's first European Cup. The game in the Bernabeu came just four days after United had lost the league to Manchester City on the final day of the season. Trailing 3-1 at half-time, goals from David Sadler and Munich survivor Bill Foulkes secured a 3-3 draw and United's passage to the final, where they would beat Benfica a fortnight later at Wembley.

    2000 Champions League quarter-final

1st leg: Real Madrid 0-0 Manchester United

2nd leg: Manchester United 2-3 Real Madrid (Agg 2-3)
    Goals: Beckham (64), Scholes (88 pen); Keane (21og), Raul (50, 52)

As reigning European champions, following their unprecedented 1999 Treble triumph, United scrambled a 0-0 first-leg draw in Madrid. But a Roy Keane own goal in the first-half of the second leg proved the beginning of the end for United, with Real striker Raul adding two more before late strikes from David Beckham and Paul Scholes, which proved too little, too late for Sir Alex Ferguson's side, whose European exit was soothed somewhat by winning the Premier League by a record margin of 18 points.

    2003 Champions League quarter-final

1st leg: Real Madrid 3-1 Manchester United
    Goals: Figo (12), Raul (28, 49); Van Nistelrooy (52)

2nd leg: Manchester United 4-3 Real Madrid (agg 5-6)
    Goals: Van Nistelrooy (43), Helguera (52og), Beckham (71, 85); Ronaldo (12, 50, 59)

United were outclassed in the first leg in the Bernabeu, with defender Rio Ferdinand admitting "they really played us off the park". Ruud van Nistelrooy's away goal in Madrid gave United a glimmer of hope in the return leg, but a stunning hat-trick from Ronaldo - the original one - ultimately put paid to Sir Alex Ferguson's side. Ronaldo received a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd when he came off, following his one-man demolition job on United. Two late strikes from substitute David Beckham gave United victory on the night, but it was Real who went through on aggregate.

Cleverley should be in there, i didn't who to put in left-back, i did think of putting Contreao in there but Evra has been excellent this season.

i would have Ozil in midfield with Carrick, they would work together, RVP up-front on his own ? i know he can do that but i would like someone to create chances for him like Kagawa just behind him.
