Cardiff Bay 0 - SA1 1 http://yourcardiff.walesonline.co.uk/2013/01/30/cardiff-bay-worst-example-of-waterside-regeneration/
... Cant argue with any of that really, Cardiff with all the investment it creamed from the rest of Wales has no class as a city. There was massive potential to do something fantastic around the Bay area but it has all become self serving to the few not the many. Its a classic example of a City getting ahead of itself and trying too hard to be something special. Swansea has suffered a little bit of this in the past too. Look at how Tesco were allowed to build that heap of pre fabbed **** on oystermouth road!! i hope there were lessons learnt after that one! Cardiff as a place to shop is great but doesnt offer anything other than that for me. They could have done a far better job of regeneration with the obscene amounts of money they had but didnt, i guess thats something that runs all the way down to their footbll club.. Swansea has alot of catching up to do in many respects but i feel there are better raw materials to work with down here then up there, connecting the city onto the sea front is something that has been talked about for years and we should be trying to harness the natural beauty with great buisnesses and services. unfortunatly we lack 2 things, money and vision !! I often see Cardiff as the Harry Enfield sketch where the guy in it always says "i am considerably richer than yow" but lacks the class to go with his wealth..much like cardiff really
The thing is, it is not just Cardiff Bay, so many parts of Cardiff's regeneration appears to have been lumped together in a big rush. As the man says, the people in the Capital have a lot to learn from the people in Swansea because here the council finally realised that regeneration needs to be done district by district, as opposed to building to building. Whereas we are going to be starting the Picton Lanes Initiative very soon, the Hight Street/Strand urban village has already just begun and SA1 is looking awesome... Cardiff are not going for any cohesive design at all. From most angles on land the view of Cardiff Bay resembles a Calcutta shanty town!!! Too many buildings, not enough space. Terrible design and terrible management. I was on one of the dual carriageways that goes passed it and it reminded me a little bit of Rio De Janeiro's favelas!
Yes i understand your point there . I think sometimes the cities are so desperate to secure investment they waive their right to the correct level of design brief/ input in terms of what their requirents may be for the area. Basically letting people carry on with what ever they want! there doesnt look to me that there was any over riing vision for the bay in Cardiff, as you say ,its just a collection of weird looking shapes and eyesores. No doubt some go for the ecclectic look ..

Have you seen what Canadians have done? What was once pristine white perma snow in winter, and untouched lush green forest in summer... has become a seething black, smelly toxic hell hole as they as allowed oil companies to raise oil from sands under the snow. It goes on for miles and miles and miles in every direction, a bit like Cardiff's muddy seaside!
Especially around the Uni. Used too see cars covered in paint on numerous occasions when driving in and out of the uni campus up there.
Ah yes, i had alot of mates working out there on the oil sands projects, good little number as long as you aint a Bear or a rackoon
I think you will find it's called Swansea Heights, with the best panoramic views across the Swansea bay. please log in to view this image
Cardiff 0 - 2 Swansea http://davincisdemons.com/blog/2012/11/07/welschcastle/ "The next question was where in the UK? In the last decade or so, a lot of production has been happening in Wales — mostly in Cardiff, thanks to Dr. Who, Torchwood, and Sherlock. Initially we looked at Cardiff. We knew we needed a big set of sound stages — at least 50,000 square feet. We found one place, but they would only give us a year option and we were hoping for at least 5 years (with the dream that the show would continue to thrive and build). Our production designer found an old Ford plant in Swansea — 250,000 square feet of space and most of it sitting empty! The plan was a little mad — turn the old auto plant into a film studio. But we did. And despite some growing pains, it turned out to be a blessing — particularly because we’ve already out-grown our anticipated 50,000 feet in the first season. (I think our sets now extend up to around 75,000 square feet.) " BOOM! Visteon Studio's... Europes LARGEST film studio. 'Ave it!
and there`s me thinking it was the iron and coal industries together with the taff trail and docks that made cardiff wales` biggest and best city.......how wrong was i,it was doctor who all along
