And at least one of those chances Rickie would definitely have taken.

Agreed. I was joking that Saints appear to have a problem scoring goals, and reflected it upon Liverpool. Saints scoring 2 to 3 per match doesn't appear to be a problem to me. :)

If Suarez spent more time playing football and less time sitting on his rear end Liverpool wouldn't be in the position they are in. Rodgers ought to drop him.

I see Coutinho came on at 78 minutes and didn't score a hat-trick or provide 6 or 7 assists, or both.

So we missed a bullet there then. :)

OptaJoe: "34 - Only once in the 3 points for a win era have Liverpool had fewer points from 26 games than they do this season (1992-93: 34). Slump."

    Oh dear! <laugh>

Yes, it might seem like an over-reaction, but I've seen the rise of Liverpool to total dominance and back again, and they are on an extremely slow demise that irresistibly won't stop, it seems. Even now they could be picked up with real investment and taken back to the top, but it appears that nothing will stop their drift into lower and lower levels in the elite league. Shanks must be doing several RPM in his grave, let along just turning.

They were talking on Sky about it being a shock defeat for Liverpool. All I can say is that they must be easily shocked. Liverpool are no longer a force and being beaten by WBA is not a shock.

It's probably not even close to being the result of the long weekend. Murray and Roberts on MOTD3 said Saints v ManC was, and I see no reason to criticise that opinion. Of course, Dublin said Villa's result was more special, but he would, being an ex-Villain.

They have a nice collection of young talent at the moment, and if they develop well it's possible that they will get back into the chase. Losing Suarez (which seems likely in the next year or two) will definitely hurt, but it could also turn them into a more balanced unit.

They do have to start turning it around with some urgency, though. If four seasons without Champions League football turns into six, turns into eight, they'll drift further away from being an apex predator in the transfer market, beyond the financial hit. As Villa discovered with their disastrous attempt to buy their way back into that club, once out, it's hard to get back in*.

*Unless you have someone willing to throw away a half billion or more. John Henry isn't the man for that task, though.

I agree with Schad; Rodgers originally said a season or two to get them right. I think they have stopped the rot at least.

Just saw that the head groundsman at Real Madrid is English. We all think of headhunting managers and players, but shows how important these other roles at a club are that they sourced a groundsman from abroad. I bet a few people mowing pitches in England thought lucky ****** when he landed that gig.

I should think that defeat on Liverpool just about finishes any hope of champions league football for them next year. Would have been a totally different result if Gerrard had put away the penalty.

To be honest, I'm probably more interested in Hartlepool v Portsmouth and Crewe v Bournemouth, at the moment.

I'm near the point where I don't really care about our on field stuff. It's all irrelevant until the PST take over. Don't get me wrong, I'm sad if we lose and happy when we win but the off field stuff takes priority.
