McShane to be offered new contract regardless of wether we go up or not.

"There will be a contract there for him certainly," Bruce told the Mail.

"Hopefully, that's in the big league but even if we don't I'm sure there will still be some sort of contract offer there for him in the Championship.

"He's shown how much he wants to play regular football here and he's not let anyone down."

The stumbling block standing between McShane and a new deal will be the terms he currently enjoys.

A permanent move from Sunderland in the summer of 2009 saw the defender sign a four-year deal worth a reported £18,000 a week and he would need to take a significant pay cut to remain in East Yorkshire, if the Tigers were to miss out on promotion.

"I've had a word with Paul already and he understands that it's a difficult situation," Bruce explained.

"He's still one of the high earners from the Premier League so you can't really start negotiations until you know what league we're going to be in. If we were to get in the Premier League next season then it's not a problem to give him the salary he's earning again.

"If we don't make it, then that salary is not something we'd be able to offer. I've explained all that to him and he understands."

I'm glad Bruce has made it clear that he'll need to take a pay cut if we don't go up and i don't think any other club will be willing to match McShane's current salary anyway. He's a good player who i'd like to see stick around, especially since his best years are still ahead of him.

He isn't an £18k/week player, doesn't matter what league we're in. Only Chester in our defence is worth anything like that, yet he's still on a relatively tiny wage. He's the one we should be getting a proper contract sorted for.

Has Chester signed the contract he was supposed to be finalising months ago? There was loads of talk about it and Bruce kept saying it would happen then he seemed to drop it completely.

I've heard nothing on it for weeks. It's sounding more and more like the Dawson one where we were assured for months that it was all OK and would be signed then Barmby got sacked and suddenly Dawson was a free agent. Bruce when he came in was shocked at his treatment and insisted the deal was finalised right away.

cant see Chester sorting out his contract terms till he finds out what league we are in .

I expect him to be playing premier league football next season regardless how we do.

I think Chester needs to improve a little bit; he hasn't been at his best recently. He has made more mistakes in the last 6 games than he has in his entire time with us, but it's testament to his ability that he's off his game and he's still been great.

If Bruce had seen Macca in the Premier League, he wouldn't dream of offering him a deal to play there again.

He's done well for us this season, but he's nowhere near good enough for the Premier League.

Personally I wouldn't offer him anything, based on me preferring all the defenders we have who mark on the goal side of their man and don't get turned 5 times a game but I know that puts me in a minority so it should be something more sensible if we were to offer him a deal. I bet £6k/week is still more than Chester is on though.

I would kick him out now but I'm just quoting this as Bruce seems to want to keep him

He's not on £18k a week, he's on a fair chunk more than that

Not quite £25k but not far off. Ginga messi has been spot on when he's played this season, though he does scare the bejesus out of you on a regular basis!

He is on £18k a week, so is Oli, they both had relegation clauses, the only player we had at the end of last season who was still touching £20k a week was Ghilas. Bizarrely.

Ghilas - another great signing by Phil Brown !

Surely if we go up again we won't make the same mistakes !

Hopefully we now have a bit more pulling power when signing players thanks to Bruce being in charge. Brown's problem was he ended up attracting targets that were well down his list of preferred players.

Let's face it none of them really wanted to come, we just afford way too much money.
Bruce commands more respect amongst the players... maybe because of his united career, i don't know.

If we do go up we shouldn't be offering McShane a new contract, let alone £18,000 a week. He's a decent player at this level, however he's on about three times the amount he's actually worth.

Nail on head. This is PR spin to downplay what he's on. I know for a fact what he earns.
