Because Newcastle got there first. Because Boothferry Park wasn't in town. Because we had more imagination. Because we can speak English not some sub human geordie gibberish. Etc. Etc. There is often limited logic behind "nicknames" or football chants/songs, so put the two together and it's not suprising it defies sense.
To confuse it further, it's only recently that Geordies were limited to Newcastle. Historically and more correctly anyone from Sunderland to Carlisle northwards is a Geordie.
It's like this BCC, we are called 'The Tigers'...why? because....well..you know those black 'n amber coloury things on our toppy type thingies that...well cover our armies and bellies, sort of resembles big BIG furry things wot have sharp teeth and scratchy talony nailly things on the ends of there sort of arms(paws) and you see lot's of em walking in the town, do I make myself clear BCC, because I can always help you wipe the dribbles away and do that thing were I do that thing with my fingers and wobble my lips making that b,b,b sound and then you start to go ga goo goo...then you eventually fall asleep!!!!!
I can confirm that Newcastle is an excellent night out. My friend's sister lives in Gateshead, it has been used as a place to crash by my good self on a few occasions. So, to clarify, I have indeed been "doon the Toon". Recommended.
I really dont understand some of these comments.... Why are we not called Kingston instead of Hull? Eh - what has that got to do with a nickname for the fans of a team? Why are we called Tigers when we dont have fur and sharp teetch? WTF - Im not talking about that am I otherwise Id be questionning why Newcastle are called the Magpies when they dont have wings and beaks? Youre comparing apples with pears here and taking my point off completely on an unrelated tangent. It does seem it's just me that doesnt get this nickname at all so clearly its something with me but I still dont see that it makes sense. And I LOVE the suggestion that I spelt the name wrong in the header
