Cheeky hypothetical question. After Gerrard retires, who do you think should/will be the next Liverpool captain? I know this discussion could be a bit premature, but the point of the thread is to analyse the leadership abilities of the current players at the club. Discuss.
depends what position on the pitch we think the leader should come from. some don't like goalies as captain so maybe Reina a no,assuming he stays. some don't like strikers as captain so maybe Luis a no. if Gerrard retires in say couple of years time, Coady could be in the first team by then so he may be a good candidate, if we need a vice captain for now maybe Lucas.
In our squad ATM we have a few players that have been captain for their previous team or at International level Suarez at Ajax and international Lucas at Gremio and International under 20 year old Agger at International level for the Danish Henderson at International level under 21's Out of the above i would say Lucas is the likely candidate IMO it needs to be someone in the middle of the pitch seeing that that is where most things happen Don't agree with Jenners on Coady as i don't think he will even make it regular in the 1st team going on current form anyway unless there is a massive improvement in his game by that time
We could have six, seven, eight new first players by the time Gerrard retires. We could have lost the likes of Reina, Agger, Skrtel, Suarez, etc too.
Don't think he will be around long enough to be our captain, considering Gerrard will be here for couple years yet or more. Maybe vice though, give him some extra responsibility and entice him to stay.
Henderson looks like a tough character, strong enough to lead the team. However, he is very inconsistent in terms of performance. Little do we know, the future captain might be in the academy.
From the current squad, Lucas. I would expect him to fill the VC role next season when Carra retires. Obviously things are likely to have changed by the time Gerrard retires but if we had to pick one from the current squad it would be Lucas for me, Agger next (Would have put Henderson but he hasnt really been reliable enough YET)
If Suarez doesn't leave i could see BR giving him the band. Lucas and Henderson would be a good choice aswell. Gerrard probably has one more good season left in him. Then he could be rotated like how Carra was this season.Henderson hopefully by then, should be able to fill in Gerrard's massive shoes. Some one mentioned Coady, Honestly i don't think he would even make it to the 1st first team.
i mentioned Coady, reason i did was i was trying to make the point That Gerrard will probably have another few years in him yet and it could be a player from the academy that will come through and step up and be captain ,i used Coady as he has been captain so has experience, also he has captained England U17s and is a local lad.
