A set of Football Heroes stamps will be released on 9th May 2013 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the FA rules being established but the Royal Mail has delivered a snub to some of the game's biggest names by leaving them off the list.

England's only World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore is there, along with Scotland goal machine Denis Law, Welshman John Charles and Northern Ireland's favourite son George Best.

But, surprisingly, there is no place in the line-up for the record cap holders for each country.

Peter Shilton is not included despite playing for England on 125 occasions while fellow keepers Pat Jennings (119 Northern Ireland caps) and Neville Southhall (92 for Wales) don't make the cut. Kenny Dalglish represented Scotland 108 times and is joint top-scorer with Law on 30 goals - but it wasn't enough to make the grade.

In addition to Moore, England are represented by John Barnes, Gordon Banks, Bobby Charlton, Bryan Robson, Jimmy Greaves and Kevin Keegan while Scotsman Dave Mackay is there.

There's no room for Geoff Hurst - the man who scored a hat-trick in the 1966 World Cup final - and Wales winger Ryan Giggs.

The stamps also celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Football Association and the 140th of the Scottish Football Association.

Sir Trevor Brooking, the FA's director of football development said: 'Everyone who loves football has their favourite players from the past.

'It might have been one of the greats they tried to emulate in the school playground or a superstar they would idolise while watching on from the terraces as a fan. It is fantastic – especially in the year of The Football Association’s 150th anniversary and the Scottish Football Association’s 140th – that Royal Mail has honoured a whole team of these heroes from across the United Kingdom.'

Artist Andrew Kinsman used existing photography of the players to base his work on and ensured that when the stamps are placed together they create the look of an entire football team.

Andrew Hammond, Royal Mail managing director, stamps and collectibles, said: 'Across England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, we’ve been lucky enough to witness some of the finest footballers to ever play the beautiful game.

'The UK has given the world some of the greatest sports and football is rightly celebrated as a national obsession. The stamps celebrate heroes of the beautiful game who excelled on the pitch at club and national level, and are rightly considered icons of the sport.

'We feel there is no more fitting tribute to the game’s 150th anniversary than this collection of football heroes on stamps.'

In addition to the 11-stamp Miniature Sheet, a retail book of 6 stamps featuring George Best & Bobby Moore will be issued as well as a Prestige Stamp Book featuring unique stamp combinations.

This isn't realistic, Byran Robson should have his arm in a sling. That's a young Bobby Charlton as well, not example a comb-over, is it?

It's designed to be nostalgic Gas - I think they're going a bit far by saying that any letters and parcels with the Barnes stamp will have their own sorting office, delivery vans and postmen though.
