There is no doubt that Malky is doing a great job with us (WUMs don't matter), but how long can we keep an outstanding manager?

With the likes of West Ham looking out for a new man, which clubs will think "why can't we get the value for money that MacKay gives Watford?". It seems likely that our playing budget will be in the bottom 3 of the championship, but Malky will again be charged with progressiing our little club.

What do we think Watford's prospects really are? Your thoughts please.

MM is a huge asset to Watford. He has brought a level of stability after all the ups and downs with Betty and Judas and has done so by using what he has available and with some good loan signings (yeah, some have been poor, but I think we will see that every season).

I think West Ham will look for someone with more experience than MM, but he will be the target of some of the "bigger" championship clubs that would require a new manager.

Our prospects are dependent on a couple of factors. If we cannot keep DG, who can replace his goals? and getting in some quality loan or free-transfer players. However, I think that whatever, we will be in top 10 of the championship for most of the season.

Tend to agree with W-y - W Ham will probably go for a "bigger" name - they don't need the cheap end of the market players so MM's skills are not so appropriate for them - but there is a lot of talk amongst West ham people about him which is worrying

Unless Norwich lose Lambert I think we will hold MM for another year or so

He likes us and we like him

West Ham seem to be taking the Wally with the Brolly! So breathing space for now, but there will be a time that we can't hang onto him, sadly. Hopefully we'll keep him this season though, we need his kind of stability. Popular with the team, and with the fans. Not easy that!

Well said H ,agree with Leo and w-y I think another season at the Vic would do more for MM than him moving to West Ham ! If he kept us in the championship again it would indeed prove his miracle working abilities to bigger clubs ,He still needs to gain experience and he will get far more of that at watford than most other places!
At least one more season at the Vic would be beneficial all round!
Leo good point about Norwich Hopefully they will stick with Lambert who has done a great job as well , I think our main danger is a bigger prem club coming in for Lambert

Priceless, a nice guy, fantastic manager and still learning, plus turning down so many teams shows his loyalty even with the trouble we in, if he was sacked I'd chain my self to Vicarage road!

If he was sacked it would cause a WD18 revolution and hanging would be re introduced for Mr B!

I think Malky will probably realise he is almost in a no-lose situation. If we do struggle next season then with the resources available, it is kind of expected... but if he does have another good season, he will be seen as a miracle-worker and his stock will only grow!! I don't think anyone is under any illusions that he will go on to big and better things, but hopefully he will realise he is still very much learning his trade, and at a team with such a great academy, I think it is the right place for him - biased, obviously. You'd think he's see what happened with Rodgers, know the grass isn't always greener, and will wait for the right move to come up....

As someone said, I think 'priceless' is the right word for Malky <ok>

Folks, my reason for posing the question was not just about West Ham - the bookies have quoted various people as "favourites" for the role over the last 12 hours, but it was meant as a question about how long will MM manage Watford.

Elsewhere I read about Barnsley and Mark Robins's dispute with his board over their budget, and there are many similar elements to the situation with us.

My own feeling is Watford are currently ranked (in money terms) in the bottom 3 of the Championship, a 14th place finish is way above "our station", but in reality how long can Watford, and MM, defy the odds?

The reason for that Overachievement is partly due to the academy! If we get stuck we pull another gem out the hat ! a lot of other clubs whilst may have a bit more money, havent got access to a facility like this! and that is probably worth 3 or 4 places on the league ladder!

I just can't see Malkay going to West Ham. That decision would involve the Dildo salesmen and their fame hungry lady friend making a good choice and probably getting promoted back to the PL.
I think if a big club were to come in for Malkay he would leave, West Ham won't.
Would be terrible to see him leave, but I'm sure we could still attract a good name to the club. Personally, would love to see Nigel Gibbs have a go

I think we have he is worth more than money to the club. The motivation he gives the players and the belief he instils in them cannot be measures fiscally, it is one of the main reasons we were So successfull in the first half of the season, the team believed that they could win. However he is a financial asset to the club, and i mean an asset (i know in general terms staff are conscidered liabilities) he saved us from the prospect of relegation this season thus earning the club money. Also if the club were to end his contract early i am sure he will recieve some severence pay which the club can doubtless afford. Also, if he were to go where on earth would we find someone with the knowledge to manage a team like ours and who knows the club. This is not an easy task, no-one knows the club like MM having been a player, a player coach and the manager, WFC is in his blood and in his heart. He loves our little club and he loves us the supporters and he will give 100% what ever happens.

Norway - yes that is what I meant re Lambert - Norwich wont sack him but a bigger club may well be very impressed by his achievement and in turn they would certainly look at MM.

I think it will take a lot to make Malky move from us - as others have said we love him and he loves us - I don't think money worries would see him leave in the short term - but if we sell players and he is given NO money it may make him question whether the Board care.

I like the publicity we get, but i dont like the lack of gossip posted anywhere, its horrible trying to second guess whats happening. I guess its just hard to cover all the clubs. Oh well

One thought has come to mind - might Malky be our Dario Gradi? I wouldn't mind still talking about the job Malky still does in 30 years time!

Actually Malky is a "no win" situation, not a "no lose" situation. If he develops young Academy or lower league players to the point where they can be sold on for significant money , then they will indeed be sold on. Any successful team he builds will be broken up/sold to pay off the debts Mr B has incurred in buying the club and to pay off the bonds, which was a condition of the sale. The key word in Malky's recent interview was "frustrating" when he described how it felt to have to build/rebuild a team every 6 months, as players are sold/ loanees return. How long will he put up with this? Not long . He will go to a club where he sees the opportunity to build a team that will last a couple of season--essential for any promotion challenge/ serious football success. If Malky wants to develop a serious career in football he must know that Watford is "stage one" of this career, and he must have the next stage already in mind. This is to credit him with a realistic and serious ambition, not to doubt his loyalty to the club and determination to do his best for us. Events and personalities will inevitably play a role, but I would expect next season to be his last at Watford, assuming he does not leave this summer.
