See Durham are doing OK so far. Hopefully the cricketers will show our motley crew how it's done during the close season.
For anybody who has not watched first class cricket live, they are missing some great days out, any chance I get, wherever I am, I will be there. The fans are both very friendly and very knowledgeable, the food is usually above par, and having a beer is not the same as at any football ground, pushing to get served,its more leisurely, a realy good day out. even my missus likes the atmosphere, shes not overfond of sports in general, but she puts up with cricket.
Agree with this - something quintessentially English and civilised about the jolly old leather on willow.
Sorry lads got something better to do like pull all my teeth out with a pair of rusty pliers, it is boring as hell. Quick question then lads in between overs:- Why can they take drinks to the seats as with Rugby yet us football fans can't? As a few on here have proved they are both football and cricket fans, I have been to the odd Falcons game as well so it's the same people watching these sports.
I went to see the Toronto Blue Jays play the Detroit Tigers a few years back. ****ing hell - North Americans reckon cricket's complicated, but they couldn't really explain half of what was happening - and the other half was incredibly boring. Right ****ed up a game of rounders, they have. Mind you, first class hot-dogs!!
Got to agree with you there spent a year in Canada and went to a couple of Jays games with the Canadian Army lads couldn't understand any of it and as you say top notch Hot Dogs pity about the beer though no Molson at the time.
I didn't have Molson - it was that other one - something "Blue". Have to admit that I enjoyed it mind, specially ice cold and served at your seat. All in all, I had a great evening, but that was IN SPITE of "the ball game"!!!
Could have been Labatts Blue not too bad it's all lager anyway and after the 8th or 9th it all tastes the same.
Spot on - both cricket and baseball are derived from rounders. I once tried to research the origin of rounders and it just goes back and back until there are no more records to consult. It just vanishes back into time. But baseball was tried successfully in a few place here - it was played every Sunday at Stamford Bridge until WW11. And then there was the Baseball Ground at Derby. Don't think it's been tried here since the war.
I'm at the Chennai IPL match on Wednesday night. Haven't a clue about cricket, apparently they don't serve beer at the games either which is what I thought the whole point is. Going to have to stash a bottle of vodka.
I think they tried to revive it at the Oval a few years ago - late 90's? - bit of a lead balloon, I think.
Cricket or baseball, baseball all the time for me unless its the ashes, but for a club game not international it has to be baseball, stopping up till 4am watching the thing (and thats not even the world series but a game midseason) is great lol mind you I also watch every American Football game thats on the TV as well. Both sports are really simple to grasp as well, ok the plays in American Football and all the niggly rules are pretty hard, but the basics are simple.
