I think they died out due to the length of Norman Stanley Fletcher's sentence.

Gather they're now fighting over where he should be buried - with the 'Yorkists' saying it should be in York Minster not Leicester Cathedral, - though until yesterday I (along with half the country I imagine) didn't even realise Leicester HAD a cathedral

Don't you have to have a cathedral to be a City? Thought that's how they got city status in days gone by.

I'm aware Hull hasn't but got special notice form the King himself. Hence Kingston.

Think everyone in York is getting confused with the difference between Yorkshire and the House of York again. Surely Northamptonshire has more right to him than any county.

Personally I don't think it should be Leicester - he met his unfortunate end in the rolling fields of the county but, whilst we have a lot of association with him because of the battle and indeed street names, it was mainly coincidental that the battle took place where it did. Not sure it should be York either - he was the last of the Plantagenet English kings - and he should thereore be buried in Westminster Abbey?

Leicester have no chance of keeping hold of Dickie now that York are in for him. <whistle>

Useless fact 2. Since the Bullshit Man is always late to work and drives at Mach 3, how the hell would he know what he has driven past/through/over/under?

It was Fotheringhay Castle where Richard was born, not Northampton. His Father, Richard of York was buried (minus head which was on a spike at Micklegate Bar in York) first at Pontefract then moved to Fotheringhay. His Brother was buried at Windsor Castle. You'd bury anyone not once King found in similar circumstances with family so they should stop twatting around and put him with his Dad or his Brother.

Cities don't necessarily have to have cathedrals although there is a close correlation (more so historically than now). As has been pointed out cities such as Kingston Upon Hull, Cambridge and Oxford are without cathedrals. On the other hand Bury St Edmunds and Rochester (to name two) have cathedrals but are not cities.

City status is basically a royal grant or charter. There are no precise requirements for the grant.

    No.

Quality subject matter this thread, a great story, sadly brought to the board's attention in a tedious "I hate Leicester" fashion.

    What a shame.

Spot on Party... but it was good that the thread rose above his infantile bile and resulted in some fine exchanges ... none of which he was involved in of course.
