For those who can remember, it took (Curbs & Gritty)/Curbs several seasons to build his team after taking over from Lenny. So how long are you willing to give Chris?

yep I remember the Curbs & Gritt days but the problem is we are a division below where they started off, we simply can't afford to slip down the football league any further, 14th in this division is the lowest the club has ever finished in it's history.

the trouble is if we do start badly I just don't know what the solution would be after removing Powell, I think so long as the top 6 is within grasp he should be kept on.

but it should also be remembered Poyet took over at Brighton, had a similar time to Powell, won a few games then went on a nasty run but they stuck with him and look what happened last season. Poyet did it with far less resources at his disposal than Powell will have so while i'm all for giving Powell a break he also needs to deliver as Poyet showed this season.

All depends on how he does. If we're bottom of the league at the end of October he will get the same treatment as the previous manager whose name escapes me, if we're mid-table he'll get longer to get it together and if we're at the top he'll get an extended contract. Maybe the question should be- What would be acceptable at, say Christmas? If, as seems likely, CP will have a limited budget, I'd be happy with top half of the table if we are improving.

I say now. History shows you wont get out of this league without a top manager - witness Brighton and Saints.
For me Powell has shown in 20 games he does not have what it takes.
Odd selection, odd tactics, ramblling press conferences, rumours of player unrest etc do not fill me with a lot of hope.
Act now before he spends any of the owners money - if indeed there is any to spend.
However, if they stick with him and allow him to develope, then I hope they can accept another sesaon in L1.
Sorry but I just dont think he has the jacobs.

''I say now. History shows you wont get out of this league without a top manager''

    Like PP with Colchester? :emoticon-0110-tongu

He will have my support unless we find ourselves in a relegation dog come Oct/November. I'm happy for him to build if our finances can hold it. He has set his bench mark of 13th in L1 (despite most points arriving before him).. anything lower than that and I think questions will/can/have to be asked.

We don't know yet what financial restrictions CP will be working under, so it's hard to say what his expectations will be.

Super, exceptions always prove the rule.
But to coin a phrase "Parky is the best gaffer in L1" so obviously I am wrong ;) especially as he "can take over from Arsene n all"

I have to ask why you seem happy to accept 13th place

I'm not happy with 13th, but I would rather a long term plan being successfully fulfilled, rather than a short term fix that someone like Gary Johnson would have bought.

The thing that gives me the most hope is the difference in football we were starting to witness. The dull football produced by the previous management team was slowly, but surely being replaced by 11 players trying to play the game. I think with some added quality in the middle and some much needed pace at the back we won't be far off challenging.

I trust the set up of Powell, Dyer, Peacock and Matthew. I just don't think the team proved to be as good as what I and others thought. Players like Reid, Racon, Francis, McOxo etc flattered to deceive.

Super, your vision is admirable and one I fully agree with.
But it would appear the new owners wont wait, having stated we are not a viable business proposition in L1.
Therefore, and where we seem to disagree, is the question whether Powell can fulfill their wishes.
Personally I have seen nothing to suggest he can.

This i agree with, give him a chance to bring in the players to play the brand of football he wants, and see how it goes until november.december, if we are lower than halfway he'll have to go.

I'm confused by the board- when they came in didn't Slater say promotion was realistic but not needed like it was under RM?

Powell hasn't got a clue what he is doing. Two wins in 20 is relegation material and he'll start next season as he's finished last. He should be sacked with immediate effect and will not take Charlton up. BWP is not a Darren Bent and doesn't come close.

BWP is as near to Bent as we will get in this division. Don't discredit him because he isn't at the same standard as one of the best strikers in the country....

Darren Bent would track back and would score goals in 7 games. BWP did not and does not come any where near to his standard, no comparison.

Red flag - of course BWP isn't Darren bent

In case you'd forgotten we are no longer in the premiership so that would be like comparing racon and Parker
    Or rob Lee and wagstaff
    Or kiely and Elliott
    Or rufus and llera
    Or humphrey and francis
    Or semedo and kinsella

No point comparing one of our best ever strikers with one of the best in the third tier is there - and that was the previous posters point
..... BWP is the Div I equivalent to Bent

    Just take that into account

I've had a good read through all the posts below and as always there's some really strong and varied arguments. The majority of which i can see the logic in... My personal opinion is that he must be given until the end of the coming campaign having hopefully been able to stamp his mark on our club, before we judge him.

I'm confident that if Powell wasn't their man, the board would've well and truly jogged him on by now, given our abysmal end to the season. Assuming that's the case, they must back him with the funds and the one thing all managers who are building a whole new team crave... T I M E ...

Since Curbs left we've had five managers and dropped from the premiership into the wastelands of League One... It's clear to me that poor managerial appointments and the chopping and changing of managers has not worked for us.

Imo it's time to back Powell for the duration of this coming season... In Powell I trust... (it's probably more like blind hope really <laugh>).
