The Mercedes looks too conservative, I see Aldo Costa still hasn't learnt. I'm so glad Ferrari fired him, he can evolve an already strong car, but can't innovate or be agressive. They gave him a whole new set of rules for 2009 and the best he could come up with was the aerodynamically basic F60. Mercedes must keep him away from their 2014 designs!

So I would be correct in thinking Lowe is replacing Costa's backside, considering that you make him sound so bad back then.

Costa seems to design cars that are well within the rules, which is fine if you're Force India, Sauber etc. What you need to be at the top of F1 is to push the rules and expand them as far as you can.

Must agree, Costa aint done a lot for Ferrari, so quite how Mercedes expect him to work a miracle for them, I don't understand. They very much need a McLaren or R.B. man and bloody quickly, oh, is that Paddy Lowe I see heading across the car park !!!!

In some ways I'm glad that the car doesn't look like it has serious potential... This way I'm not going to get my hopes up.

Come on Bahji, lets not give up on our man quite yet, you being a Yank and all, I thought you guys always took the positive view.:grin:

Never seen so many Hamilton fans on a Mercedes thread since Monza 2011 :0

I can't think why that would be. I mean, what connection does Hamilton have with Mercedes these days? ;)

Anyone would think he drives for their works team now.

Costa is chief designer isn't he? I don't think Lowe would step down to that position.

Engineering director, Lowe used to be one before he became TD at McLaren. Sounds like he will be the man to stay behind and totally focus on the future of all the Mercedes F1 cars rather than go to all the races.

What I posted when the news came up about Lowe leaving:
An old subject but should clear things up a bit with where Lowe could go:

Mercedes AMG has begun to restructure its technical team. Italian magazine 'Autosprint' reports that the team's chief of aerodynamics, John Owen, will be promoted from his current position to become the technical director. (Bob Bell's job)

Along with the promotion of John Owen, 'Autosprint' has learned that Mike Elliot, who has just joined the team after leaving Lotus will fill Owen's old position.

While this may all seem like natural progress, it does create questions as to what will happen with the current technical leaders at Mercedes, including Aldo Costa, Geoff Willis and Bob Bell. All three are highly respected and have also only joined Mercedes in 2011. Aldo Costa was picked up after leaving Ferrari, Geoff Willis came from HRT after a 2-year spell at Red Bull Racing and Bob Bell left Renault as Managing Director.

It is unclear if the men are going to be retained at Mercedes, it is also possible the Mercedes is looking to reduce F1 costs and may seek to create a leaner organizational structure.

So it looks like Lowe will be either:

**Engineering director: Aldo Costa
Technology director: Geoff Willis

**Since Lowe was an Engineer director before he was Tech,D at McLaren.

So the new lineup should be:

Technical director: John Owen
Aero: Mike Elliot
Engineer,D: Paddy Lowe
Technology,D: Geoff Willis

Axed: Costa and Bell

I keep thinking it's Schumacher, even with the blatant yellow helmet. So weird for me, and probably for macca fans.

Doesn't it feel strange though? For others?
My heart sinks every time I look :(

I imagine the drivers will be happy not to have to look in their rear view mirrors so much. 20 years ago it was because he was coming up to lap them, last three years, well, i could say something but it would be very very mean and I'm just not like that.

You have your own opinion, I respect it, to an extent hahaha.

EMSC, Nah, you will soon get used to it, Hamilton will show you how a Mercedes should be driven.

Well it would be good for his aspirations, but it would be awkward as heck if Rosberg beats him.

Seems thermal management is the name of the game with the SilverMercedes (Hi Silver :D )

Don’t write them off: New Mercedes W04 technical analysis

We shall see :bandit:

I'm watching you...

But anyway, both Scarbs and Tobias Grüner (AMuS) didn't really say anything fantastic and I kind of agreed with them even before those comments, it looks basic, very plain, big and unrefined at the moment regardless what the journalist hype will try to make up. If anything they're starting from 2012 again in my opinion considering how out of the mold they're when everybody else has gone for tight rears and smaller sidepods etc... and no new front wing will sort that out since they are basically starting from scratch this year.

My confidence of a "strong-ish" 2013 has been shattered already, but confident the punishment of today will be rewarded in 2014 when the team works together properly for once.

I am looking at the positive. :)

And I'm a pessimistic British expat. :)
