CELTICâS glamour Champions League tie against Juventus is set to net the Hoops a record £5MILLION. This monthâs 60,000 sell-out at Parkhead will become the most lucrative 90 minutes of football ever played in Scotland â as cash from fans, TV and UEFA bonuses floods in. The Celts will rake in around £2.2million from season ticket holders, who were each offered one £37 brief, plus two extras at £49 each, to watch stars like Gary Hooper and Andrea Pirlo. Footie governing body UEFA will also award the club £2.9million for playing the Italian giants in the last 16 on February 12. Add TV cash and corporate hospitality to the mix and the game is set to earn the Scottish champions at least £5million. Despite the high prices, fans queued from 8am last week to snap up remaining tickets. Football finance expert Dr Chris Brady said the clash would make the Hoops âeven strongerâ. He explained: âCeltic are unique in Scottish football and the money will make a massive difference.â Dr Brady also insisted that high prices would not put fans off following their team. He added: âItâs all about supply and demand. Itâs not going to frighten anybody off. Itâs Juventus, itâs the Champions League and itâs reviving old times. âIf I was a Celtic fan Iâd pay double what theyâre charging.â Stuart Patrick, chief executive of the cityâs Chamber of Commerce, insisted the match will also boost Glasgowâs coffers. He said last night: âIt is set to be a tremendous economic boost for the city and will be warmly welcomed by the entertainment, leisure and hospitality sectors. âLegions of fans will descend upon Glasgow from the length and breadth of the UK and Ireland, and the affluent Italian city of Turin.â Read more: http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepag...76224/Match-of-the-pay-day.html#ixzz2Jp7KjHaF
Lawwell must be one happy man... Hopefully Lennon will get to see some of this cash bonanza in the summer. Also, maybe sit down with Hooper and give him the contract he wants... rumour he was offerred a double yer money but he was wanting closer to £40k - I'd give it to him. Increases his value as well as he will go at some point.
The problem is that half these players have the same agents - so you break your wage structure for one player then every time you go into negotiation with another player the same agent points to the deal you did for Hooper.
True... However, maybe Celtic can afford to change their overall wage structure for players who have massive sell on value.
40k We cant afford that. The maximum we can afford to pay is 20k a week. To start paying 40 we would need to qualify for the last 16 every year and that is not a risk worth taking.
The rumours I hear is that Broony is on £30k, with a raft of players on £15k to £25k, Hooper is on £12k... Hooper was valued about 8m January but in Summer will only be £5m max ... giving him £30k/£40k would increase his sel on value - he's in demand.
Doubt brown is on 30k. Steven davis was the highest paid player in Scotland last year on 28k a week. Exclude European revenue and our turnover is decreasing so it doesn't make sense to increase the wage bill. I know that if we can tie him up on bigger wages we can demand a bigger fee, but he could easily get injured and we would be stuck with a huge bill.
I think we have a tendency to overestimate how much players are earning, especially at Celtic. I doubt Brown is on more than £25k per week (lucky bastard) but he was signed at a time when we were spending (relatively) silly amounts of money. The days of us signing new players and paying them £20k+ per week are over. Also, I think we have to go through the qualifying rounds again for next season's CL. We might not be so lucky to draw teams from the likes of Finland the next time.
Platini's "champions route" through the qualifiers should mean that (if we win the SPL) our path to the group stages is very navigable. Albeit with an extra round next year. Mick makes a good point about the agents. The whole thing a disgusting cartel tbh.
I'm sure I recall Sir Minty moaning to the press that Celtic were paying Broony £20k odds when we signed him from Hibs, and how unfair it was that Celtic were paying him more than Rangers offered?
First of all, all we know about the wages individual Celtic players are rumours which may Be true or may not. What Dermot Desmond and his board will be deciding will be , are they Going to increase their wage structure and if so by how much, or they going to maintain their wage structure and bring in more new young blood. Funny enough I reckon D D Will make the right decision as he has shown in his business career so far. I also have faith that P Lawwell and N Lennon will carry out his guidelines to the best for Celtic.
Extra money earned this year should be used to help us absorb losses in less fruitful years. If we had missed out of the Champions League this year we would be on to a large loss this year. We will miss out again at some point and we've got to be able to invest in talent and maintain a squad capable of qualifing for the CL when that happens not increase running cost so that when we don't qualify losses are even greater.
A total rethink is required on match tickets, season tickets, etc. Crowds are dwindling (apart from the CL games) and the "bread and butter" games need the supporters at the games. Family/Child tickets policy needs to be looked at in depth as they will be the new breed of supporters. All costs are far too high. The standard of food available at the outlets is abysmal and the costs are absurd. Bring the game back to the working man/woman and we will all be there in large numbers. Celtic are quick to advertise their charitable donations, which is fantastic, but it is high time that charity was extended to the lifeblood of the club-the supporters. As big Jock said "without them we are nothing". Open your eyes Celtic.
