I was asking as I don't know a lot about his record, who was the overhead goal against (Man City?)? Derby winning goals? And didnt you get mullered in the CL Final anyway?

I just don't remember him really lifting your team in a really important games, great players over the years have turned up and had a really big influence in important games and finals and this is the mark of a great player imo.

I've seen him fade, being subbed and even not selected.

I will concede though that I don't pay that much attention and may even turn over if you are winning, so I am going on the odd game and highlights which can warp an opinion so feel free to shoot me down if I'm wrong.

A, yes, against City. Goal of the season, knocked the wind out of their title challenge and we won the league.

B, not really relevant, it was still a champions league final and he was our only decent player that night, a proper bright spark amongst the rest.
He didn't play half bad in the one he's won too.

Ok, it was February. At that time they still will have been considered title candidates. We certainly were not nailed on at that time, what with recovering from the Rooney transfer request and such like.

They EVENTUALLY lost out to fourth with Spurs, yes. It's not like this goal happened in April.
