I hope you never thought otherwise and you haven't mentioned the Russians yet.

Oh I always suspected it, but some solid evidence would be fantastic. I haven't given up hope that this World Cup may not happen, and yes perhaps this will shed some light on the Russian bid as well. Both promise to be dreadful tournaments.

Sadly, this doesn't shock anymore. Once more, I think I need to swap places with Tom Hanks and go and live on a desert island. I'm so disappointed in some human beings. Present company excepted.

What about the woman who started giving alcohol to her daughter aged three so they could go out on the lash when she reached eighteen. Most of us look at our children with hopes for the future...how many would look at a toddler as a prospective drinking partner. The girl is now nineteen and unemployed (quelle surprise!) and going out regularly with her mother.

So in other words, her plan worked?

There's also the kid that got a tattoo aged 3 in Cuba (I think, red it in a red-top yesterday).

Well I've had an interesting night. Got in from a night out at the SU to find my housemate had "relieved" himself all over the floor.

This happened to a friend of mine at a party the other day, it was a result of too much MDMA. Good reason not to do those kind of drugs.

Wherever I've been today I've overheard the various moans and groans about petrol prices. When the public were vox-popped the usual answer was the petrol companies making too much money, and possibly they do. I wouldn't argue with that. But cheap petrol prices are never coming back, and we have to get used to that. However, when I heard a Govt spokesperson talk about how the price of petrol in this country is competitive, I wanted to spit. Am I the only person out here who realises that the reason the price of petrol is so high, is because of the bloody duty [hang on, let's not pull the wool over peoples' eyes - it's tax] being so sky high. It's around 55% or the pre VAT price, and then they have the gall to add VAT to the total price, not the product alone. This all goes into the Treasury and what do we get for it..? Someone please explain to me what the petrol tax actually does..? People wouldn't moan so much if we properly knew the destination of this tax. Just to put it into perspective - without the tax, sorry duty, the price of petrol would be around 75p per litre including VAT. Back to cheaper petrol..! Bet that would get the economy rocking.

I'd be okay with it if the oil companies paid their bloody taxes. In the long run, though, this is all largely redundant because we're either going to find an alternative to petrol or stop driving altogether.

Back in 1990 I was working for an Undersea Fibre Optic cable manufacturer in Southampton. The Internet was a couple of years away on the horizon, in the UK. I turned to a like minded colleague [we talked science, technology and the environment together] and said that the Internet would eventually kill off the High Street, and I estimated it to be around 2025. He laughed, but I was fairly confident. Nowadays, I'm not so sure. I think it might be earlier. Maybe 2020 or earlier still. Of course there will be the Supermarkets, Niche Shops and Showrooms, but people will buy off the Net. The planes, trains and automobiles will be going hither and thither, delivering and supplying the goods, and the traffic could be severely reduced, especially if people really start to work at home, with only the necessary workforce and service people out there.

It might even help save the environment. Mind you, I've been pessimistic about that for 10-15 years or more.

You might think that last statement flies in the face of my previous post. It doesn't. I realise the price of petrol is necessarily high, but let's not apportion the blame for it solely in one direction.

People complaining about the price of petrol get no sympathy from me.

They shoot past me at 80 plus mph on the M3 and jump in their cars for the shortest journey they also accelerate like idiots away from the lights.

I'm a miserable old git but I can get of my arse and walk to the newsagent and I always used to walk my grandaughters to school even though they whinged about it.

If you really want to save on fuel it is easy - just drive less and when you have to drive then drive more sensibly.

With a bit of effort you can half your petrol costs and give the environment a bit of a break.

I was walking home the other day - a fairly long walk, but easily manageable - and a taxi driver slowed down and, with a concerned look on his face, asked if I'd like a lift. Now I appreciate his generosity, but I'm 22 years old and my legs work fine. Is walking simply a strange thing to do nowadays?
