Scottish football is edging closer to reconstruction after the country's top 12 clubs backed proposals for a new league model.

SPL clubs agreed on a new setup that would see the current format replaced with two leagues of 12 and one of 18.

The plans will be put in place for next season if ratified by Scottish Football League clubs at a meeting on Thursday.

"The clubs were united in their view about the need for change," said SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster.

"I firmly believe that any change can only come from consensus and there's one consensus model for change going forward.

"The SPL clubs have been clear today that they, in principle back this being taken to the next stage."

Doncaster insisted the mood of the meeting had been positive.

"It was a good discussion," he said. "It's always a robust discussion between SPL clubs, but a positive one.

"It's now for the Scottish Football League clubs to give their views on Thursday."

Has anyone said what they hope this change will affect?

I am not against it, I just want to know why we are doing it.

If it is a turd polishing exercise then say so.

In my opinion (and I suspect most of the SPL chairmen), if this does nothing but do away with the present way the SPL splits, then it will be worth it for that alone. I hate the system at present because of the sheer stupidity of it.

Then you'd have hated my rugby union esque grand final idea.

We were talking about test cricket the other day and were knocking about ideas for changing it up. Dan Starkey pointed out that there isn't much really wrong with the way things are. And he was right. We were talking change for the sake of change. I fear the SFA/SFL/SPL might be doing the same.

The biggest 'win' out of this would be the more equitable* share of prize money.

*I am using that word because I can't think of a better one. I don't necessarily think that the assumption that Celtic win the league ......and the league winners get by far the biggest share is inequitable by every definition of the word.

When I was in the Army I used to carry a cricket bat around when we were on Exercises. Used to love cricket, more to watch than to play but I was a huge Ian Botham and England fan in the early 80s. I even had this, it was fantastic.

Don't the new proposals also have a split? One that is even more complicated and silly.

The premiership does quite well with a setup of 20. Why not copy that?

This new set up proposal is a load of ****e. The worst and most farcical thing to happen all season is the SPL split, and they want to add more? Are they on ****ing crack? What makes it even worse is that I've heard (correct me if I'm wrong) that when the leagues split, the 2nd group have their points reset to 0? So we could have a situation where a team has finished in 9th, miles ahead of the teams at the bottom, but could still be relegated? And then there's still play offs to be played? Complicated beyond belief.

What we have at the moment isn't exactly brilliant but I can't see how this can be any better. Obviously it's all motivated by money and thats all that matters to the men in charge, but as a fan, I can't see myself getting excited at the prospect of this new set up coming into play.

In the new system we don't have teams getting 3 home games and 1 away game against some teams.

We can't have 20 teams because the "Diddy" teams want 4 games against Celtic.

SEVCO fans on RM threatening to boycott SFL games next season. Only problem is that the real money for SFL clubs is not so much the home games, but at sports direct arena or whatever it will be. 10,000 approx at games over and above SB holders, means that this portion is split, giving SFL club the equivalent of 5,000 ticket monies. Now most div 3 grounds only hold 3-4.000 at max, meaning at home games they only realise half of that.

SEVCO do the math yourself you dumb feckwit s.

12-12-10-10 seems the new proposal with two teams being invited in to make up the numbers ; more teams is the exact opposite of what is needed.

Source of that information please? Last official statement from SPL SFA and SFL said that 12 12 18 was the only deal on the table. Think green suggested the one you quote, but was not even considered.

    Exactly...

Part time teams need to join into a regionalised pyramid system with juniors and highland leagues with two main divisions of ideally 18 top division ( x2 games) and 12 (x 4 games) Second Tier full time teams... few relegation and play off stops

League Cup back to group stages or look at ways to generate intrest by joining the Scottish and English LC together...
