Football club's a huge hit in South Korea

An enormous poster of Swansea City’s Premier League players has been put up in a bustling shopping mall in the Gangnam district of Seoul, South Korea’s capital city.

Gangnam has been made famous across the planet because of ‘Gangnam Style’ – a smash hit dance anthem by South Korean pop star PSY that took the world by storm last year. The video for the song became YouTube’s most-watched of 2012, amassing a whopping 983 million views.

The poster includes Ki Sung-Yueng, Swansea City’s South Korean international midfielder. It’s also being used to help market Fifa Online 3 - a multi-player, internet-based football game.

Swansea Council says Premier League status means the city’s profile has never been higher.

Cllr David Phillips, Swansea Council Leader, said: "The Swans deserve enormous credit for what they’ve achieved. Their success means millions of people across the world have now heard of Swansea for the very first time and will be running searches online to find out about the city and what is has to offer. It proves that Premier League status leads to the kind of exposure you just can’t buy.

"Their success also shows the council was right to build the Liberty Stadium. Since its construction, the Swans have gone from strength to strength and the Ospreys have won the Celtic League and Pro 12 tournament four times. A recent report also found Premier League status was worth £58 million to the local economy last season.”

The poster in Seoul complements all that Swansea Council has been doing to make the most of Premier League status by raising Swansea Bay’s profile as a place to visit.

Cllr Nick Bradley, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said: "Innovative outdoor advertising and marketing campaigns have led to many thousands of visiting fans from across the UK and beyond coming to Swansea Bay and spending time here since the Swans were promoted to the Premier League. It’s a league watched by millions of people on all continents that truly has global appeal.

"You can’t underestimate the popularity of the Premier League in football-mad South Korea and the Far East. Millions of South Koreans will be following Swansea City’s every move because of Ki Sung-Yueng.”

Good story. Naming no names but I know that some Asian signings in the Prem and elsewhere have been to exploit the huge market there. You can't say that about Ki. Quality signing of a quality player. But it's definitely going to have a beneficial effect on the League and on us as a Club. I regularly see Asian faces at the games and that was unheard of previously. Let's hope it continues. <ok>

Dont be surprised if we go East for the summer tour. An opportunity lost to capitalise if we dont.

If they do go to South Korea then I would like to think they make one appearance in Japan, they also follow the South Korean players closely. It would be good to just to make their football fans feel involved.

Best make sure Adidas deliver more kit before we do. Though next season we'll have another set of kits reverting back to the old-modern badge.

and me , but I have to ask , who's tickets are they having and if Ki moved on then they'll go with him .Funny that cardiff have Korean players but doesn't seem to have the same impact on their global aspirations .

They are probably unaware that Cardiff have South Korean players as the Championship get near to no exposure out there. Premier League is king followed by La Liga, then Serie A and Bundesliga. I would imagine the French, Portuguese and Dutch league get more exposure than the Championship.

    Huge difference ,
We not being shafted by owners who couldn't give a flying f**k for tradition ,changing red from blue , your history gone on a whim , the owners taking a chance on your club actually surviving at all if he decides to pull out . Now their the type of people I hate , as I said no comparsion.

Ummm... while Cardiff is being beamed across Asia, the whole continent is watching Demark's english language footage of the Swans every.... single.... week. Did you not stop to think why Denmark chose to broadcast their footage of Swansea games in English?!?! It was because there game could be shown to a much bigger audience. The only games that Denmark cannot resell to beam across the world are those bought by domestic television companies, who themselves sell to be reshown in international markets.

Trust me, outside of the UK nobody knows Cardiff exists.

    :p
