We didn't have a manager, Tomlin didn't have a club!!

Sorry but just an observation from the time and not a criticism but I thought MA came in about 24/48 hrs after Tomlin's departure, maybe I'm wrong but if that was the case then surely he would have been fully aware of the situation. I need to go and do some research because I could have sworn I queried this at the time.

    ps.
Thought I was right although timing slightly a stray by a day. Tomlin 2nd July, MA 5th July. Maybe Mad Dog did not genuinely have a say or his position confirmed until after Tomlin's departure then. Would need to look back at comments at the time.

Not sure the relevance of that link, that just confirms the loan period, not the unfolding events thereafter. Hessy would have kept Tomlin but because he left his duties in May it threw up a bit of a problem due to the time it took to appoint another manager. I just find it strange that it took until the date mentioned for Tomlin to sign for Southend, when it appeared at the time to supporters (without knowing the club business dealings) that there was a continued optimistic opportunity on Tomlin. I can remember at the time people suggesting that the incoming manager may be making some of the decisions before appointment. What short memories we have.

brb surely at 30 Tomlin is too old for you to want us to sign him?

And talking of short memories I seem to remember lots of grief given to Hess the first time we signed him following his poor goal scoring record at Dagenham.

I am also shocked with this but he would be great however where would he fit in if we were to sign him then how would we line up as the only way I can think is 4-3-3 but then we know that this is not always the best formation however that would mean that we would not need as many midfielders and then I could see us signing no more midfielders as a midfield of Whelpdale, Lee, Weston would probably be what we would go with and that would be fine however I think the main focus should be a utility man like Wright someone who holds the midfield together.

4 3 3 with a midfield of Whelpdale, Weston and Lee!!! Wow now that would be suicide, fantastic going forward maybe but who is going to close down and win the ball back, would make for some entertaining matches I am sure but leave us far too open, you are losing the plot almost as quickly as Mr Allen, 4 3 3 with Weston as one of the front 3 i could see working, but you need at least 2 holding midfielders and that has to be where squad strengthening takes place this week.

Yeah that is why I said it is not always the best formation.

the southend echo has said a southend spokesmen has stated they won't be selling there top scorer Gavin Tomlin to Gillingham at any price they offer or any other club come to that.

we look elsewhere and quickly !

Yes, but you should have read down a bit further and to one of the comments...

As if a player is not for sale at Southend United.
They would sell their own grandmother!!

Yeah not for sale will only mean that they will want a lot more for him, he is not for sale but if a good offer come in then they would accept it.
