The Club would like to thank Nigel Adkins for his service over the past three seasons, and wish him well for the future. Executive Chairman, Nicola Cortese said: “This decision has been made with the long-term ambitions of Southampton Football Club in mind. Whilst we acknowledge the contribution Nigel has made during the past two years, for the Club to progress and achieve our long-term targets a change was needed. That was it short and sweet.
Wrt the lack of a mention in the programme, I can understand why people might want to see a nice mention for Nigel but an explanation? The website had already said that the new manager had been appointed to take Saints to the next level. Did we really want Cortese to spell it out? Nigel is just not tactically astute enough and his lack of profile was inhibiting our ability to attract top players, perhaps? The last time a boss of mine was fired, a memo was circulated to thank him for his service to the company indicating that he had decided to pursue opportunities elsewhere. Everyone knew that he had been fired but there was no need to rub his nose in it. The feeling that NC had made a mistake was so widespread that saying nothing was probably the best thing under the circumstances.
Just read it , thanks Fran and apologies to all who knew the club had in fact thanked Nigel . Off for a slice of humble pie .........
Just looked it up and humble pie is made of deer lites, so you were quite right not to consider custard.
Good man no problem with that. You have to admit it wasn't presented with a fanfare of trumpets, many missed it because they can't be asked to negotiate the Official Web Site which to be honest is a mare and need sorting out for us less nerdy types.
I'm in the trade and we print a couple of programmes where I work and you are pretty much spot on. Believe me, if you want that programme on the monday you aint changing nothing on the friday. Just can't happen.
For those who think Cortese lacks a little warmth, for want of a better word, I'd agree, the above is definitely not gooey and gushing. I suspect it might have only added fuel to the fire if the Club had gone slightly further and said... Whilst we acknowledge the superb contribution and achievements Nigel has made during the past two years... Though I'm sure something like that would have undoubtedly suited a few more fans better. However, the statement of thanks was what it was, and we move on.
so the "breathing room" comment was ok then? Suggest you brush up on your history if you didn't get that reference.
I found that particularly offensive actually, likening a Swiss businessman to the Nazi party. While I have always enjoyed your abrasive comments in the past, CBK, this time you've gone too far, not that you'll give a **** what I think.
You vile Person. Jog on CBK. You've been particularly childish in light of recent events and this is absolutely disgraceful. Edited out insulting comment
Look, I'm not going to criticise your particular feelings on the subject of what has happened within the Club, to Nigel, Andy, etc.., as you are perfectly entitled to feel the way you do, although I would suggest you confine yourself to realistic references when you quote from history. But do you have any remote idea of when your personal depression over the Club you support is going to come to an end, because I feel that you are dwelling unnecessarily on this whole episode. Nigel, Andy et al, will regain employment very soon indeed, I've no doubt.
