Well he's blown it now. After all Pardew's tact and diplomacy, Coloccini's basically admitted that he DOES NOT want to be at Newcastle.

    I'm disgusted.

Fabricio Coloccini admits he 'needed' Newcastle exit in open letter to San Lorenzo fans

Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini has claimed that he "needed" a move to San Lorenzo in an open letter to the Argentine club's fans.

The Magpies' captain was seeking a move to his former club this month due to a series of personal problems, but Alan Pardew claimed on Friday that the 30-year-old will remain on Tyneside until the end of the season.

The letter read: "To my San Lorencista family

"I write these lines from a long way away where I am missing my country, my family and my close ones. And with sadness of knowing that after a series of meetings held here in Newcastle that my return to Argentina has been momentarily suspended.

"Unfortunately, life does not always end up like you wanted it or needed it to, many times is it influenced by third parties and the rigidities of contracts that are stronger than the will of one’s own desires.

"However, I am convinced that this moment of disappointment need not be an obstacle for me to declare my profound gratitude to each and every one of you for the affection and the support that you all have provided me during these past few months, in every way imaginable.

"Furthermore, I wish to acknowledge the patience and the respect of the media and the serious manner in which they conducted everything during this time for me and my family.

"I am sure that they have understood the personal situation that I have been going through and can comprehend that the silence maintained for both me and my representative, Marcelo Lombilla, during this time, has not been capricious but due to the need to keep private certain matters.

"Lastly, I wish to thank the authorities at San Lorenzo del Almagro and especially show my gratitude to the president, Dr Matias Lammens and vice president, Mr Marcelo Tinelli, for all the affection, support and understanding they have afforded me and who from the first moment, without any reservations or conditions, were interested in my personal and family situation and who put themselves at my disposal.

"Essentially, I want to thank the enormous effort made by them, from every point of view, to remove whatever difficulties I may have come in touch with.

"In these times, in which the leadership of the Argentine football appears less challenged by various reasons, it is with deep pride - as part of the San Lorenzo family- I wish to acknowledge to Matias Lammens and Marcelo Tinelli on their personal qualities, for their professional qualities and for their excellent management, their the honest work, their seriousness and commitment in placing the human being over and above other interests, all of which is a heading from the chosen path for our club; and that in the distance, certainly, I am filled with satisfaction.

"Sincerely thank you for both affection,

    "Fabricio Coloccini."

While I understand that it is appropriate to say complimentary things to San Lorenzo when he is writing to San Lorenzo, there are a couple of things that are extremely disappointing:

    1. "Unfortunately, life does not always end up like you wanted it or needed it to, many times is it influenced by third parties and the rigidities of contracts that are stronger than the will of one’s own desires." Very nice. His desire is to be there. He is here only because of the contract. Rip up the damn contract and stuff it up his nose.

    2. "this moment of disappointment". Really? So Pardew was lying all along, and he really DID want to be at San Lorenzo? He's "disappointed" to be at Newcastle? Coloccini, you don't know the meaning of the word "disappointed". How disappointed are we to have a captain who's all bullshit and hypocrisy?

Okay, now I've got that off my chest........

I guess this is his attempt to keep San Lorenzo onside with a view to the future (not to mention his father's job security!)

The only way he can win me back is by producing an open letter to NUFC and fans showing as much consideration and appreciation of them. And he needs to do it pretty quickly.

He is copping heaps on Twitter, and if he doesn't do some damage control (or get Pardew to organise it for him!), I fear his appearance on Tuesday will be met with boos rather than applause.

That letter is very dissapointing. He's just thrown petrol on a fire that was nearly out.
I'd be tempted to pass the captaincy to Cabaye now. I just can't see Colo giving 100% now

Yep give someone else the captaincy, maybe stick Colo on the bench on the rare occasion Taylor is fit.

Or maybe it's a load of rubbish. How many people in 2013 write letters for a start.

WOAH THERE! Hang on folk, there could be more to this. We don't fully understand his motives, despite the press speculation. He could have genuine personal reasons why being half way round the world is not feeling great for him right now. So, what if there is more to it than meets the eye to us fans?

His father was a key influencer. So imagine for instance (and I wouldn't wish this at all) that his dad has been diagnosed with something and wants his son to be there for his final months. What would YOU do if it were you?

Or imagine this is a pivotal moment and it could spell the end of his marriage. What would YOU do if it were you?

Or imagine you have spent five years in Argentina and hadn't seen your family or friends, or the places you grew up with and genuinely feel home sick. What would YOU do?

There could be any number of factors we don't know about. But let's try and see it through his eyes, rather than thinking he owes us something. He doesn't. He stuck by us through relegation and promotion and has become a crowd favourite and team captain.

Whatever his motives, he has my blessing. He is a professional and I think he wants what is right, but his heart is being torn in two directions.

I would love to see him in the Toon shirt and will cheer him on.

None of those reasons explain why it has to be a transfer? Surely it'd be better to loan him if it's a short-term problem and San Lorenzo might be able to cover that expense?

This is all very much like the plot of lost, and when the final episode comes around, the writers have dug themselves so deep into **** because they had no idea where the story was going, that all we'll get will be some weak ass ending... "Colo woke up and it was all a dream", "God made Colo do it", "Colo is actually and always has been dead, his zombie corpse rising from the grave to fulfill his human ambition of playing soccer at the highest level".

<wah> I just want everything to be resolved, you guys said it was and that he's my best-friend <wah>

Gandalf, Colo said he'd only be your friend if you write about the badgers. He told me this himself, so it's true!

Gandalf should set up a Badger appreciation thread where we can all share badger love and pics of our favourite badgers.
My favourite is the Honey Badger.

I love Colo. I mean really really LOVE him. I know there are things going on that we don't understand. He even alludes to these oft-mentioned "personal problems" in the San Lorenzo Letter (as it will be referred to in the history books):

"I am sure that they have understood the personal situation that I have been going through and can comprehend that the silence maintained for both me and my representative, Marcelo Lombilla, during this time, has not been capricious but due to the need to keep private certain matters."

I think we have all felt tremendous sympathy for him because whatever these problems are, the guy is clearly miserable. Something is very wrong and I assumed that he knew no other way to deal with it than to return to Argentina (possibly under duress). I never believed he was choosing to leave Newcastle and this was confirmed by Pards who said it was all 100% personal problems and not about playing for a particular club. I thought the whole SL thing was a bit of a smokescreen to direct attention away from the nature of the actual "problem". It never made sense to me (as mentioned before) that the guy would buy a house in Newcastle a few months ago and then so quickly develop an urgent need to return to his boyhood club. I believed he was trying hard to do the right thing even though we did not know the real situation.

I still want to believe that. The reason that I'm so upset is that this letter is to a football club and its fans. Not to his father. Not to his wife. Not to his doctor. He is telling SL his heart is with them. He cannot be with them because of "the rigidities of contracts". I was buying Pards' story that a sense of responsibility and concern for NUFC is what made Colo stay for the moment. Colo has just blown that out of the water by stating that it's the inability to get out of his contract (without paying big bucks) that is the reason for him staying in Newcastle against his will. That is really a slap in the face.

Someone please tell me that I'm wrong and this is all just another misunderstanding. If he could write an open letter to NUFC fans, it might be a move in the right direction.

Did he not realise that this letter would be translated and published? Did he not think about the consequences in England? As if he didn't have enough trouble, now he's got a whole new bunch of people hating him!

Letter could yet be disgusting Argie propaganda. Might be the clubs effort to show that the fault was more on Newcastle's end than theirs. Where was it published? Apparently it originated at San Lorenzo's Facebook page. Mmm......

I'd just be surprised if Colo came out and did something as stupid as this, and yet he is kept on as captain - hell, that he is even still played.

Pinch of salt springs to mind. Who knows if he penned that letter but frankly I couldn't care. My concern is the current fortunes of Newcastle United. Provided he rocks up prepared and ready for games then I don't mind. His obvious wishes will likely be sorted in the summer.

With the amount of ill-feeling The Letter seems to be generating on Twitter, will he go into Tuesday's game with confidence? Will he play well if the fans are expressing their discontent?

He may be so distracted by the negativity that he's likely to collide with Shola's immovable torso, thus bumping into Williamson who is attempting to head a low-flying bird. Once he's on the ground, Jonas will undoubtedly fall on him, grasping at an imaginary injury and pulling ridiculous faces. Colo goes off on a stretcher, Villa wins, and there we have another exciting installment in the saga of NUFC 2012-13.

Really don't know what to make of this "letter" personally l truly hope its fake. I cannot believe that Colo would be that naive as to think he could pen such an emotional piece to SL staff and fans, and not expect it to get leaked and published in the UK and the effect it would then have on NUFC and it's supporters.
The disappointing thing is that this whole silly saga was just about done and dusted, and now controversy rules again, but perhaps that's the point of this letter, to cause upset and mischief, for those reasons, l am going to treat it as fake and malicious, until proven different.

I have a feeling I know precisely what this little stunt is all about.

His dad is on the board of San Lorenzo directors or presidents from what I can gather, right?
Well I reckon a bit like in Spain where these guys get elected and make promises based on that election, Colo's dad has PROMISED to deliver his son to the club.

This letter is a way of basically officially saying "I've done my best but failed" on his dad's part so he doesn't get lynched for breaking his word. I suspect it was drafted by someone other than Colo and he just chose to sign it.

It's club propaganda, hence no reference whatsoever to Newcastle United. Legally they would get hammered if they slated us.

The biggest worry is if Colo goes all sulky and plays deliberately badly so is dropped, making it easier to go AWOL. I would hope he still has enough residual respect for us and Pardew not to do that.

What's more, he hasn't really got that long to wait has he?

I agree 2Silver. The key line is this:

"Essentially, I want to thank the enormous effort made by them, from every point of view, to remove whatever difficulties I may have come in touch with."

Really dubious that. Stinks of 'Oh San Lorenzo did everything they could, this is all Newcastle's fault', even though we know San Lorenzo never even made direct contact with Newcastle.

Yeah, it's a club PR thing isn't it?

To be honest, I don't even find the supposed sentiment from Colo to be that hurtful to us. It says nothing new other than I want to come home and thanks to you guys for trying to make it possible.

We knew all that already. I'm more concerned by what he tells Pardew and his assessment of his attitude.

I don't believe Alan would play him as captain if he had doubts about commitment in the short-term. It's his neck on the line too!

So Coloccini has sent an open letter to the club who unsuccessfully tried to get him on a free. It mentions nothing about us and looks on one hand respectful to them, but is really a slap in the face of every one of our fans who has funded his time here.

The letter, which was published by the Twitter account of San Lorenzo, read: "To my San Lorencista family.

"I write these lines from a long way away where I am missing my country, my family and my close ones. And with sadness of knowing that after a series of meetings held here in Newcastle that my return to Argentina has been momentarily suspended.

"Unfortunately, life does not always end up like you wanted it or needed it to, many times is it influenced by third parties and the rigidities of contracts that are stronger than the will of one's own desires."

"However, I am convinced that this moment of disappointment need not be an obstacle for me to declare my profound gratitude to each and every one of you for the affection and the support that you all have provided me during these past few months, in every way imaginable."

Coloccini added: "I wish to thank the authorities at San Lorenzo del Almagro and especially show my gratitude to the president, Dr Matias Lammens and vice president, Mr Marcelo Tinelli, for all the affection, support and understanding they have afforded me and who from the first moment, without any reservations or conditions, were interested in my personal and family situation and who put themselves at my disposal.

I think its propaganda on San Lorenzo's part. We've been discussing it in the other thread.

Hopefully we'll get confirmation either way soon.
