Sky Sports understands that Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has arrived in Newcastle ahead of his proposed move from Montpellier.

Newcastle agreed a deal over the weekend for the 23-year-old defender, who was also rumoured to be interesting Arsenal.

Now the French international has arrived in the North East where the Newcastle hierarchy are hoping to convince him that a move to Tyneside is the right decision for him.

Newcastle are hopeful that Mbiwa, who will also undergo a medical, will finalise his transfer within 48 hours.

Mbiwa is not the only player in talks with Newcastle, as Nancy full-back Massaido Haidara is also in the city to conclude his switch.

Montpellier central defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa has now arrived on Tyneside for a medical and negotiations over a proposed move to Newcastle, after a fee in the region of £6.7m was agreed between the two clubs.

An international team mate of Yohan Cabaye, Matheiu Debuchy and Hatem Ben Arfa, Mapou captained his side to the League 1 Championship in France last season.

The 23 year-old centre half played the full 90 minutes of a Montpellier's 2-3 defeat away to Marseille on Saturday Reports in France claim he'll receive a £60K weekly salary - suggesting that he's the Fabricio Coloccini replacement.

Montpellier club president Louis Nicollin told French journalists on Monday that:

"If he's an ass, it's not my fault, but I think his manager has a lot to do with it. Newcastle really isn't a good choice. He'll get himself moved on next year, but it doesn't bother me.

"We agreed that he could leave if he found a club he liked. We're not going to cry. His head was no longer at Montpellier, but it's not a problem. He's not irreplaceable. The important thing is that we get some money in."
