He's better than Shola... Would be immensely useful as a number 2 striker, might work well with Cisse. Could become number 3 later on, but would still be a useful player I think.

For that, I think the board will not sanction £5 million. They'd be more likely to sign N'Gog for £2 million <doh><wah>

£5m for a 'number two'? I suppose we've been known pay a lot more for $hite players.

We spent 3mil on Obertan. You pay slightly more for strikers anyway. If 5-8 goals help us stay up its money well spent

Quotes from the Montpellier president labelling MWM an "ass" for joining Newcastle. Also says something about it being down to the manager. He also says that MWM will be sold next season.

Luke Edwards always puts a sensationalist twist on things in my opinion...He has simply taken half facts and forced them towards a conclusion that helps him sell papers...Plus he got the player's age wrong which is a schoolboy error for any sports journalist!

We might not sign him, but Edwards knows as much as us!

Reports said that an announcement is likely on Wednesday, so not a major issue if he wasn't there yesterday. Hopefully he'll have a medical today.

That said, I'm not holding out hope for any signings and not reading too much into any of these reports on any potential deals until I see a pic of the player on NUFC.co.uk wearing a Toon strip.

Optimism that Montpellier captain Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa will complete a move to Newcastle in the early part of this week has begun to give way to apprehension that another toon transfer target could be poached.

It's unclear precisely how firm Arsenal's alleged interest in the central defender is, but the initial claims that he was expected on Tyneside during Monday are now speaking hopefully of Tuesday or Wednesday, amid one claim of delays due to the current weather conditions.

If the Montpellier club president is to be believed though, then the deal with go through, with Louis Nicollin telling French journalists on Monday that:

"If he's an ass, it's not my fault, but I think his manager has a lot to do with it. Newcastle really isn't a good choice. He'll get himself moved on next year, but it doesn't bother me.

"We agreed that he could leave if he found a club he liked. We're not going to cry. His head was no longer at Montpellier, but it's not a problem. He's not irreplaceable. The important thing is that we get some money in."

Meanwhile, quotes attributed to the AS Nancy club President indicate that they have accepted Newcastle's £2.5m offer for their left back, Massadio Haidara.

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa played the full 90 minutes of a Montpellier's 2-3 defeat away to Marseille on Saturday and a fee of around £6.7m has been agreed, amid reports in France of a £60K weekly salary - both suggesting that he is a replacement for Fabricio Coloccini.

The 23-year old defender is a current French international and lifted the French League Championship last season. He was first linked with a move to SJP in August 2012.

Meanwhile, there also seems to be some optimism that this week will see the arrival of AS Nancy's French U21 international left back, Massadio Haidara.

A fee of between £2m and £3m has been mentioned for the 20 year-old and comments from the Nancy President apparently indicate that a deal is in place, although it's yet to be confirmed whether the player has reached agreement.
