Leeds drew at home to Birmingham City in the 3rd Round with Luciano Becchio scoring a 60th minute equaliser to force a replay at St Andrew's. Birmingham took the lead again only for Leeds to progress through to the 4th Round with goals from Ross McCormack and El-Hadji Diouf. Tottenham won their home 3rd Round tie against Coventry City 3-0 with a brace from Clint Dempsey and a Gareth Bale goal. This will be the 97th time the two teams have met and the first time since February 2010. Leeds United were founded in 1919 after the demise of Leeds City, who were evicted from the Football League due to financial irregulatities (Port Vale took their place). United were elected to the Football League Second Division for the 1920-21 season and won promotion to the First Division in 1924. The first meeting with Spurs came in October 1924 with Leeds winning 1-0 at Elland Road (which used to be known as the Peacock Ground - hence Leeds nickname) and Tottenham winning their home match at White Hart Lane 2-1 with Jimmy Seed scoring Spurs first goal against Leeds. The clubs met for two more seasons in the First Division until Leeds were relegated at the end of the 1926-27 season. Both clubs were in the Second Division for the 1931-32 season and Spurs took three points out of four off Leeds. The clubs met again in the First Division from 1933 to 1935 with a win apiece and two draws. The first League meeting after WW2 came in the Second Division in November 1947 with Spurs winning 3-1, a score they repeated at Elland Road in April 1948. The next season's matches were both drawn and the following season Spurs regained their Top Flight status beating Leeds 2-0 at the Lane but losing the reverse fixture 0-3. The first of nine FA Cup meetings between the two clubs came in the 3rd Round in 1954 with Spurs drawing 3-3 at Elland Road and winning the replay 1-0 at White Hart Lane. Leeds United were back in the First Division for the 1956-57 season and remained in the Top Flight for four seasons before being relegated in 1959-60. The Yorkshire club returned to the Top Flight for the 1964-65 season under Don Revie and it was during this period that Leeds enjoyed the most successful spell in their history, maintaining their Top Flight status for 18 consecutive seasons until 1981-82 and winning two League Championships. The Leeds home match against Spurs in August 1971 was played at Boothferry Park, Hull as Elland Road was closed due to crowd trouble. Leeds were back in the First Division for the 1990-91 season and had another good run of 14 consecutive seasons in the Top Flight, including winning the last old Division One Title in 1991-92 before the competition was re-organised as the Premier League. After Leeds were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2003-04 season, the only matches against Spurs came in the 2009-10 FA Cup, where the clubs drew 2-2 at White Hart Lane in the 3rd Round. Peter Crouch put Spurs ahead just before half-time but Jermaine Beckford levelled things up in the 52nd minute. Roman Pavlyuchenko looked like securing Tottenham's passage to the 4th Round after 75 minutes, but a Leeds penalty converted by Beckford deep into injury time enforced the replay. The replay at Elland Road was won by Spurs 3-1 with a hat-trick from Jermain Defoe. Leeds goal was scored by Luciano Becchio. The clubs have never met in the Football League Cup. Overall, Spurs have won 36, Leeds have won 31 and 29 of the 96 matches between the two clubs have been drawn. please log in to view this image Full History of Tottenham Hotspur v Leeds United Matches 1924-2013 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & Leeds.... Like the last time, you could be right but this Spurs team is unpredictable even though we are unbeaten in eight.
Won't be easy. Think like last time though at Elland Road, our quality should come through and eventually beat them (even with a few players rested). I'd go for: Friedel, Naughton, Caulker, Vertonghen, Ekotto Falque, Hudd, Livermore, Townsend Sig Defoe Subs: Hugo, Dawson, Parker, Deuce, Bale, Lennon, Obika/ Mason I think Townsend should definitely start, he's got so much abuse (and given a bit too) from Leeds fans on Twitter that he'll be well up for this match, providing the hostile atmosphere he'll recieve won't put him off, I can see him putting in a great performance IF given the nod. 3-1 Spurs. Defoe, Townsend and Sig. COYS!
We've had our allocation reduced by the police. If Leeds fans can't be trusted not to cause trouble with another club that's not even a rival then they shouldn't be allowed to have home games. I don't know too much about how Leeds fans have been behaving this season but it does seem like an overreaction by the police to me.
Just as long as they don't do the "get into grappling match in front of their keeper when taking a free kick, disrupting his view" routine that always worked against us...
It'll be interesting to see how strong a side we put out for this one. With a week's break leading up to it, I expect that we'll only see a couple of changes.
Anyone know why Vertonghen didn't play against United? Did he pick up a knock or was he being rested? Me too although I'd rather we wrapped a couple of players in cotton wool and gave Pritchard a chance. We shouldn't risk Dembele against the likes of Michael Brown though, if he gets injured we're ****ed and his physical style of play is bound to annoy a few of their players and draw some "special treatment". I'd go for Friedel; Walker, Dawson Caulker, Benny; Huddlestone, Parker; Sigurdsson, Pritchard, Bale; Dempsey. We need to use these kind of games to help us answer questions about players. Is Pritchard ready? Can Dempsey play up top? etc.
He was ill, YV. Villas-Boas mentioned him in the post-match press conference and said that we named him in the 18, but didn't even let him sit on the bench.
Verts confirmed that on his twitter feed as well PNP and YV. I like the look of that team SoS, though I'd personally have Carroll over Hudd and I'd like to see Pritchard make an appearance sooner rather than later.
I went Leeds a couple years back when we faced them in the cup and nearly had a tear up. A bunch mugged off my cousin after the game and threatened "to do us over" when we retaliated, the police intervened and we got moved on to our coach, this was AFTER Spurs fans were held back for 30 minutes after the game finished too, so the knob heads were clearly hanging around waiting for trouble. Rumour also went around that Millwall fans turnt up with 3 coaches and had all their windows bricked, not sure if 100% fact though. Have to say was a real dodgy atmosphere/ area to be in, in my opinion, I won't brand all Leeds fans scum but the ones we came across were right wrong'uns.
My experiences at Elland Road haven't been great either. I have always found them to be some of the most hostile fans I have encountered.
The reduced allocation is because we one a court case deciding that WYP should pay for the police presence at Elland Road, this has pissed them off so they've started messing about claiming they can't afford to police large numbers of away fans. Millwall fans, 3 coaches!? I'd suggest that's bollocks mate.
And why would they need more police if they didn't feel there was a liklihood that you'd cause trouble? Newcastle bring numbers to us but we don't need a big police presence because both sets of fans get along fine so as I said either the police are overreacting or Leeds fans can't be trusted to behave themselves when a Premier League club comes to town.
