Does the recorder count? Seriously, I tried to learn the guitar when at school but gave up after 12 months. To date, I collect music and DJ, and If I were to learn any instrument (and this is on my to do list) it would be the bass guitar with the sax second. Other family members play keyboards

I am also a singer, now - was trombone at school but school was a long time ago. I rarely sing solo restricting myself to mostly choral groups - I believed that I blend better than I sound alone but our choral group recorded a Christmas album in late Nov and I was ill for part of the time - can ell what i missed because the tenors actually sound different I was close to the microphone and when I was ill another stood in my place and it is apparent, at least, to me.

Played the trombone when I was younger. I thought carrying the case looked cool, like a 50s mafia man!

Thanks to those that replied to this thread and your nice comments. It's good to see that so many of us on our board can play an instrument(s) to varying degrees. It's something that money can't buy. You know that if someone can play that they have put in the hard yards to do so.

My biggest regret is not having learned to play an instrument when I was younger. Music is a universal 'language' and even if you don't speak the same language it is a great source of connecting with people...

The voice is also an instrument which can be trained. Took me a long time to pick up the techniques.

I played Guitar and flute back in the day in a trad band (if you could call it that!) but I changed over to the fiddle (violin) and went at that for about 3 years. Never mastered it though. Could belt out an aul beat on a Bodhran too but I don't think that counts

Chucked it all in. Haven't played anything in years now - had to give up playing my flute because my eyesight was suffering :emoticon-0136-giggl

The voice is the best of them all if you can do it. If you're a good singer you can make it big (or do the Karaoke circuit if you don't!)

That Username and Avatar has Oddball written all over it! I hope he's left be. Nobody should take offence at him, he doesn't mean any harm.

He's exactly what this forum needs.

I agree mate. The voice is arguably the most wonderful instrument of them all.

A truly soulful voice can make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

I remember walking into a really old church in Rome and there was a nun sitting alone singing 'Ave Maria.'
It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. She had an incredible voice.

Quick everyone, re-tune your monkey minds. :emoticon-0110-tongu

Nines, that's an amazing tale about Paul Cook. Its not often someone can say they knew a musical legend personally. Good on ye mate.

    Great OP overall.

Very good OP 9s. My Aunty dated Paul Weller, now that man has a voice. Want to get him to sing at my wedding(if we ever get round to it). Here's hoping!!
