Apart from a couple of really stupid signings like Carroll, I haven't actually seen too much evidence of that.

Is that a joke?

I think buying a key player from any Prem team the price will always be high as the clubs have more money than foreign clubs so can hold out for more cash,

Yes that is a better way of putting it. And it just happens that all English players apart from about 3 play in England. Torres is the obvious one but a couple of others come to mind. It's the club being English, not the player.

It's not supposed to be easy or cheap to sign a key player. It's totally logical that a club would value their key players higher than any other club would value them. If anything, it's actually that a lot of foreign players, such as Michu, are underpriced because their clubs are struggling financially.

Adam Johnson - £12m
Victor Moses - £11m
Kieran Richardson - £2.5
Scott Sinclair - £7.8m
Jack Rodwell - £15m
Nick Powell - £3.75m
Hope Akpan - £370k
Jay Rodriguez - £8m
Charlie Adam - £5m
Steven Fletcher - £12m
Kyle Bartley - £1.3m
Zeki Fryers - £3.7m
Ben Foster - £5m
James Collins - £3.2m

Those are all disclosed transfer fees for British players this season that I consider to be reasonable. Apart from Liverpool spending stupid money because they're stupid, there aren't many ridiculous cases of clubs overpaying.

I don't think Adam Johnson for 12 mil or Jack Rodwell for 15 mil is reasonable. Even Jay Rod at 8 mil is too much when you consider what you could get abroad for a similar price. Only seems reasonable because of the inflated price of British based players.

Looking back through the years Milner for 28 mil, Bent for 24 mil, Curtis Davies for 10 mil, Reo Coker for something like that aswell. Sure theres more but can't think of them off the top of my head

Considering Johnson's performances this season, he seems to be justifying the price tag. Also Rodwell is international quality and will play for England many times, I can assure you. A young player should be given until the end of his contract to justify his price tag, and I'm positive both Rodwell and Rodriguez will do that. As I've already said, it's not that British prices are inflated, it's that a lot of foreign prices are deflated.

It's a bit like some people will only buy something expensive because they believe it makes it better. You see this in ordinary life where women will buy a handbag purely because it's expensive and people buy the latest technology. Raise the price and more mugs will buy it.

We will have to disagree about Johnson as I really don't rate him. "International quality" doesn't mean you have to spend big money on the player, but like you say it is down to financial circumstance abroad why their players go cheaper. If they had the TV deals the Prem teams get then it would be similar in their countries. Also I don't think playing for England necessarily makes you a good player, especially in certain positions.

To be honest, with the obvious exceptions of Carroll and Downing, and to a lesser extent Henderson (who has potential IMO), there haven't been many ludicrous fees paid for British players recently. I have seen enough of Rodriguez to convince me that the £8mill we spent on him is money well spent.

Joe Allen is another ridiculous signing, but note that once again it's Liverpool. Saintmagic makes a good point about Milner and Bent as well, but I think we have to put the blame on idiotic clubs rather than the market.
