Like I said couple days go, my mate who works at St Marys said we are in for Butland.

How is it that everyone thinks we are better than our current position, was NA not getting 100% out of the players? Is the new guy going to see a amazing turnaround with luck, you know, those deflections that had been flying in off our players are suddenly going to be at the right side of the post? I hope you are not too dispondent when we get our arses kicked tomorrow, because even if we turn up, I sense a bucket load of confusion against a well drilled Everton.
For me, this experiement can only end badly.

I don't, but what I am trying to say is that Cortese wants us to be and will do whatever he thinks necessary to get there. I disagree with your last statement; this experiment will go one of three ways: it'll end badly, it'll end massively improved, or we'll stay the same.

Can people remember this is a transfer rumour thread, there are plenty of threads to moan or whatever you want to do.

But we also need to build a top team that can survive first and foremost, it's no good us splashing £40m in the window on great players who don't fit into our team and who just destabilise us. I think there is little question that on paper a pairing of Astori and Forren would be far better than what we have, but to use that horrible old cliche; football isn't played on paper. Dropping two new centre-backs neither of whom can speak the same language as each other or the rest of the team into the deep end I don't think would improve us in the short term by any stretch of the imagination. And I know we want to look long-term, but if you keep looking at the horizon and walking eventually you're going to step in dog ****, you still have to look where you're going. We had a horrible start because our inexperienced team was given a baptism of fire and we chopped and changed and the organisation and team chemistry was all over the place and we got bullied. Then we finally got a structured team together and stuck with it, and that's what's gotten us to where we are now. I don't think we can afford to just go back to the drawing board and start again, another manager learning his way, a defence learning each others names and a nasty run of fixtures, that's an unnecessary risk in my book. The team can and should get bigger but we don't need to do that all at once, with the team we have with Forren added in, and perhaps a winger and some other depth, there would be no excuse for getting relegated and that's all that matters this year, the gain from buying a bunch of risky and expensive signings would be minimal this season, the loss could be massive.

True Mikey, but I never said "dropt the two CBs", I just pointed out that just becasue they are "ok" or "good enough", that is not a reason to not sign better players who can take the team forward over time.

I'll throw an business cliche in to the mix.... "you don't stand still, you go forwards or you go backwards, but never stand still"

I can't help but think the Astori deal is still on and that he may have been recommended by MP. After all he has said he has been researching the team and scouting in Spain and Italy. Can anyone clarify to me what position Coutinho plays as it seems he is in the same mould as Ramirez? If he can play on the left or right then I would understand it but if he is more like Ramirez I am unsure why we would sign him.

Chelsea have Oscar, Mata and Hazard. No issues with them having three qulaity but similar players who play in similar roles. Incidentally, they are all playing today.

<laugh> yep I'm just trying to avoid the Adkins threads everything has been said about 100 times.

Back on topic, would anyone not want Butland here?.

I'd like Butland here. Him and Gazza over the next 5 years would be great.

How about the Barcelona winger who was being discussed recently? Maybe Mauricio has better contacts with Barcelona... living in the same city and all that.

Yes, I would want him, but he is still one for the future. A little while ago, he seemed like the real deal, but has slipped off the radar a bit. Unless, of course, he just needs to be at a good club:smile: I think we need a good experienced keeper for the end of this season. Are we trying for a match set of keepers...a bit like the Wade Pigs.

Been a defensive liability for Fulham this season.

Okay. I haven't seen that much of Fulham.

Left back is an odd one because I'm not totally sure what we're looking for. With Shaw and Targett coming through there seems little point in signing another up-and-coming youngster. Shaw appears good enough for the first team but ideally you'd want to give him a rest every now and then so someone like Riise who can play a couple of positions seems to me to be the sort of player we'd want.

It really wouldn't surprise me. Boruc has done alright recently - certainly better than anything we've had previously this season - but he hardly fits 'the model' that we seemingly want. Butland however does.

Butland fits the profile but he wants games right away. Surely picking an inexperienced kid who's reportedly been shaky in the Championship to be our fourth keeper of the season is a step too far even for us?
