Cortese will believe he has done. He knows that financial and footballing success go hand in hand. Remember there are probably easier ways to make money than running a football club, so he is in this because he wants to run a football club. You know the saying the only way to become a millionaire running a club is being a billionnaire in the first place.
I've been saying this since the minute Adkins was sacked, I just couldn't be arsed to write a paragraph or two on it cheers Godders.
Without a Saints match to listen to on the radio this weekend it was time to move on so I retuned my digital radio. Lo and behold. For the old timers out there, and perhaps the not so old but who like fantastic music, try Jazz FM on Saturday afternoons. Pete Young is just so whimsical in his delivery, whilst his musical taste is wide ranging - soul, latin, blues, jazz-funk, do-wop, gospel. And not mainstream rubbish either!! It'll have you putting your dancing shoes on!!
Good post Godders. Today the press saying from different sources that Nigel went because of disagreements between him and a number of other people
Neither could I until I heard Matthew Le Tissier's poison on Radio 5live this morning and I am disappointed that the media have chosen to repeat it. I am afraid our one time hero has let himself down badly on this one.
I'm into the Blazing Redheads and Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand as was) as I just love their energy. Try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtEyxG9_Cwk and this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kODQM7s1Ps4
I accept that I have no influence over the club, however it is whether the fans continue to feel a connection for the team; if it becomes a 'their club' ethos and alienates the fans then people will stop attending.
Just had enough curiosity to listen to Gary Richardson's programme on 5Live just a moment ago. For those who wish to have a listen it's here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01q17sw Start on 25m 22s and you should get everything. Personally, I think it is utter twaddle. The facts are two excellent promotions and a hard, but stable introduction to the PL, and then a sacking. Yep, the timing seems wrong and the decision is harsh. We had Matt wittering on for 5 minutes, with nothing positive to say about the Cortese tenure, albeit led by the questioning. He mentioned that Cortese had made several dodgy decisions since he's been at the club. In truth, we have yet to find out whether he has actually made a single fundamental dodgy decision since the takeover. One thing I would admit. This sort of thing will continue whilst Nicola continues to remain in the background and doesn't explain himself on the odd occasions of changes within the club. He doesn't do himself any favours and it could be construed as being disrespectful to the supporters. However, he has absolutely no obligation to do so, so on to the next game.
After the initial shock, I am looking forward to see what the new boss can do . The two promotions came very quickly for the team, for NA and the club. NC saw the chance of grabbing a well respected young manager and took it, nothing personal but he sees it as an upgrade so only time will tell. I do hope the staff for the acadamy teams are left alone
The academy is doing well and u18s qualified for the elite squad...no need to make changes there (you would think!).
It is almost as if we need a State of the Nation speech every so often so there can be no doubt about Nicola's plans and intentions for the club. Without such a statement rumour and mischief making are rife and will have a negative influence on the club and its supporters but more importantly the team.
People are saying Cortese doesn't speak to the fans....reading a lot of stuff on other forums, he's very wise...I wouldn't want to speak to most football fans either. He would be exposed to simplistic twaddle from people who couldn't run a whelk stall never mind a complicated business like a football club.
Indeed, St.G. Although I make the suggestion myself, as you have above, I am not one of those who needs constant reappraisals and reassessments to the ambition and direction of the club. I know that the media need it every 5 minutes, or they become unstable in their little bubble cells, but not me, or I would hope, the average Saints supporter. Besides, I thought this was a pretty good statement of intent:
Great post. I respect Cortese and Adkins for what they have done for this club. We wouldn't be where we are today without either of them but now Adkins is gone we have to move on. I feel that as long as Cortese is at the helm he will continue to make decisions which he feels are in the best interests of the club, whether he turns out to be right on this one or not, we will have to wait and see.
Well, indeed Fran. Having mentioned that he doesn't do himself any favours by not explaining himself, I still very much agree with you. Can you imagine the outcry if an interviewer asked NC why he doesn't speak directly to the fans, and he gave your answer..? Tbh, I'd probably applaud him for his candor. In any case, I'm sure the season ticket holders "Dinner with Cortese" will continue.
Things always come out of the woodwork in situations like this...people get their chance to twist the knife. As I said before, whatever the reason, Nigel had lost the support of Cortese. Life can become very difficult once others realise it. Adkins was a great manager who gave us 2 wonderful years...no need to tarnish that with detail. Another reason for Cortese not to explain himself more than he has...do we really want a list of Nigel's failings in the view of other people. We do things in private.
