You know mate, I read this earlier, and thought maybe we should get him up here and have a look at the lad.

Facts are City have gone up a massive curve, the lad was being talked about as a massive England start in the making, surely it's still in there somewhere?

Such a shame, mental illness is something very close to my heart and my thoughts go out to him. I really feel he could have been a top footballer for England. I hope he persists with the help available to him and wish him well with his recovery.

surely he was in breach of contract, i don't understand why city had to pay him... he got too fat to play football, surely there's something in their contracts that says you need to keep in reasonable shape... even andy reid never looked like that!

This is so true. I work with a fantastic singer who has seriously mental health issues. She has recently overcome a lot of them and is now starting to realise her potential. She will never be completely free of her demons but she has had good help from both professionals and friends and family.

What this lad needs is the right people round him. He could still have a fantastic career. The question is does he want it?? The only way you can get over your problems is to want to, that's the first step, he needs to ask for help. Then he needs the right people to help him.

RIGHT PEOPLE, exactly. Some try, half heartedly but just aren't into it, you know?
Sometimes you just stumble across the right people/person like I did.
Not talking physco babble here cos I've had a belly full of that, sometime it happens without the other person knowing it.
And that feels better than any of the so called professionals I've been to see.

I have someone now who helps me a lot & because she knows nowt about any of that ****e she doesn't give any advice, she just listens & never judges me on the **** things I've done in the past. She just listens. Not saying it would work for everyone but it's helped me.

I fear time isn't on his side Mush, mental illness is something with you for life
It will take years for him just to fully come to terms with what he is living with and gain a full understanding of what he experiences. He will need to learn what his coping mechanisms are and learn to see early danger signs that are going to affect him and manage to side step them or he will, like the majority of people living with mental health, relapse.

That's a very sad story about such a promising young lad. Its only 2 or 3 years ago many of us were banging on about going for this lad on loan or buy him oursleves.

I fear where this lad might go from here and I hope City have provided some help for his family to help him.

I lost a good friend to suicide from depression 10 years ago and can see the symptoms.

Thumbs up to that mate. As you say everyone is different but it makes a massive difference having someone you can talk to who does no judge and does not have their own agenda. Problem with football (just like he music biz) is someone always an an angle or an agenda they are working to.

apologies for playing devil's advocate, but what mental health problems are we talking about here? it all sounds a bit ambiguous.

in any case, he got done for drink driving twice, he's lucky he didn't kill someone. in my opinion, this is quite simply a case of a lad who got given too much money and hype too soon, got really rotten luck with injuries, and pissed it all away. the mental health thing, given the ambiguity of it, sounds like an excuse to me.

I don't mean to be rude back but this is the problem with modern day society, people are still unaware and uneducated about mental health. To me it is quite clear this is a troubled young man, coming out with comments like "he just wants to be left alone", are clear indications this is somebody who is suffering and in a dark place.

    This totally.

Before I lost my good friend my attitude on depression was they all need a good kick up the arse and get over themselves.

Since that day I have educated myself on mental illness and the quiet devastation it causes. If someone has cancer they get lots of attention and sympathy but mentally ill people don't. I too recognise the symptoms of a depressed person here and hopefully there is plenty of support for him from family and friends.

Meh back and you need to educate yourself on the subject, like Cest took the time out to do because your attitude stinks and is quite offensive, to be honest.
