Joey Barton claims on Twitter: ‘I’m more intelligent than 97% of Britain’

Joey Barton has made more friends on Twitter after submitting the bold claim that he is more intelligent than 97 per cent of the British public.

During a bizarre rant in which he referenced Darwinism and natural selection – and campaigned for the introduction of ‘breeding licences’ – the former Manchester City and QPR midfielder taunted his followers with a variety of inflammatory tweets.

In Barton’s diatribe, which spanned a number of hours on Friday, he suggested the vast majority of the social network’s users would be ‘extinct’ if it wasn’t for the welfare state.

And despite making mention of the ‘vile insults’ he was subjected to in response, Barton appeared to be revelling in his role as the protagonist.

‘To be fair most of you wouldn’t be around if we lived in an actual Darwinistic society. Your that stupid, you would now be extinct #dullards [sic],’ he wrote, before beginning to blow his own trumpet.

‘The reason I’m successful is that I work hard. I’m more intelligent than about 97% of the British Isles.

‘If anything football has held me back. If I wasn’t a footballer I’d be still more successful than 97% of youse. Still harder working than 97% of youse. Still living life not just taking part. Some of you want to get off you arse’s and take part in life. Before you know it you will be dead and know one will even know u existed… [sic]‘

Taking a curious turn, Barton also refocused on his off-the-wall idea for what he called a ‘breeding licence’ that would – we assume – see prospective parents subjected to some kind of test before being allowed to have children.

‘Whilst, I’m at it. You need a licence to drive a car. To own a gun. Yet, no licence is needed to have kids? Work that out?’ he added.

Appearing to be about to sign off, Barton then concluded: ‘To the 97% try to catch me. To the 3% I’m trying to catch you. Later people xx’

However, not content with his work to that point, the Marseille midfielder returned to his feed to declare: ‘When I said 97% before, I was being(as I always am) a little humble. I actually think its nearer 99%. Have a nice weekend thickos’…

‘You know what I love about Twitter. People come on here to provoke a reaction from me with their vile insults. Yet, they go away much more irate and annoyed than the ever make me. Its so, so easy to wind them up. When will they realise whose in the driving seat? #halfwits’

It’s not the first time Barton has raised eyebrows with some choice phrases on Twitter.

Just a few days ago, he was involved in a bitter spat with former City team-mate Dietmar Hamann while last year he also found himself in hot water with his French employers when he complained about their ‘farmer’s field’ of a pitch and the temperature of their showers.

Money does give people some odd ideas. Being a Barton obviously completes the set, as this guy can't help himself confirming so often!

Used to think he had something but what a twat (him AND me in different ways). The way he's going I can see some nutter jumping out and decking him properly some day.

I'm normally not an advocate for any form of violence but in Joey's case, one could be forgiven in making an exception.

I doubt it. an intelligent man wouldn't make a total arse of himself time and time again.

So he openly admits he's saying stuff just to wind people up, and then people who've got the whole exchange laid out in front of them still get annoyed with him for calling them stupid.

I think he might actually be on to something...

And there was me wondering why as a nation we 're facing relegation from the middle league, having lost our place at the top some time ago. Now we know. It's because we're all morons. Thanks Joey. It's good to know we still have some intelligence somewhere.

It would make a nice change if there was actually a headline about Barton relating to his profession, i.e. he's had a good game or scored a f**king goal! Apart from when he assaults people, how often does he make the back pages for footballing reasons?

Isn't the word he is looking for 'Darwinian'? I have never heard of 'Darwinistic' before. I might be wrong but pretty sure the phrase is a Darwinian society?

‘I’m more intelligent than 97% of Britain’

He probably meant 97% of people in Britain but was too dumb to realise it.

He's right though, he certainly is smarter than most trees (and Ashley Cole).

Beat me to it Imaz. I'm prepared to accept, until studies have been completed, that Joey IS more intelligent than 97% of the land mass of the British Isles, which he is what he is actually claiming. Reckon a good chunk of the granite on Dartmoor is brighter though.
