We all know that some fans on here support for the club only rekindled when we got back into the Premier League. The thought of getting enjoyment from travelling to see Saints lose away midweek in League 1 in Oldham is a totally alien concept to them.

Its why some fans "get" supporting a football club, no matter what and others see it as their entitlement to demand success.

Well Cortese sees at a business, a business he wants to flourish. He therefore needs to be without sentiment to make the best decisions for the club. Everyone seems to love the vision of becoming a major force in English football, I'm afraid this is one of many sacrifices. If you're unsure you want Southampton to be up there with, then you're following the wrong sport because every player & manager want to be the best, so why don't the fans?

Referring to the original title, is being successful worth having a soulless club because you seem to think it is. (not saying we are now because we sacked adkins)

I guess you could argue the same for anything in life, why pledge your allegiance towards anything.

it is true that managers, players and chairman do change. But if everything changes and we no longer have any connection to the club then why support it. The club becomes the possession of one not that of all the fans, ex-players etc that loved the club. Is it our club or their/his club?

Now you could say it has never been our club but if you feel connected, wanted and most importantly included then you will feel more passionate towards it.

Speak for yourself. I don't want to be a "major force in english football", mostly because yet more bellends will attach themselves as "fans/customers" to my club.

So how does sacking your most successful manager and replace him with one with no achievements, no knowledge of the english game & no language skills to communicate smack of "getting the best" eh??

I agree. I said earlier today, that today has taught me that there is more to a football club, and supporting a football club, than their results.
Today I have learned that a club's footballing 'success' isn't just their position in the league table, or how full the trophy cabinet is. It's loyalty amongst the players, fans and staff, it's continuity within the club, and a tight knit team spirit within everyone involved.

Unfortunately, Cortese is clearly lacking in those characterisitics; for him it is all about results on Saturdays. That saddens me.

I admire Cortese's ambition, but maybe he is slightly too ambitious for his own good. Perhaps he wants a little too much too fast.

which is the same road Lowe went down and look what happened. Alienated the fans, the media, the good feeling of the club... all because "he knew best"... when actually, he didn't.

The goal is to have a core of these players coming through the academy. They are less likely to be dick heads because they are schooled and taught to respect officials and behave in a sensible manner. Even if they do turn out to be bellends then they will be our bellends (Much like Terry, Gerrard, etc).

I am as disappointed as anyone that Adkins has been sacked, but Pochettino has been praised by every Spanish journalist & reporter that I have seen comments from so is obviously highly regarded by people who have followed his career, not looked at the statistics from this season. Cortese isn't a stupid man, he wouldn't sack Adkins now and replace him with Pochettino if it wasn't best for the club.

I hear you man. Nothing against this new guy as I have said before. But I don't think it will be the same as if Nigel was here. Look at what he did for Rickie, Jason, Adam and the rest of the boys, they must feel sick. Right, I'm done.

No offence, but Adkins being heavily linked to the Blackpool job will be quite reassuring for Cortese, I think.
