It was mentioned by a Norwegian journalist on Wednesday that he wanted to talk to the manager...thought that was strange that he hadn't met Nigel but now clear. I thought Nigel was pleased we drew at Stamford Bridge, but didn't seem as pleased as you'd expect. Think he's known for a while.

My overriding impression of all of this seems to me to be that Cortese didn't believe that NA could take the club into the top half of the division and beyond as he planned, so when a manager who he believed could became available, he took the opportunity straight away. I've seen plenty of foreign journalists saying how Pochettino is a coup for a club like us and an excellent appointment. It's very easy to look from the outside and go 'Adkins was doing well, this is a mistake', but we don't know the inner dealings of the club, and how NA and NC's relationship was, and we don't understand the relative merits of this new manager. I disagree with the decision, and did really like Adkins, and thought he was going to be our manager for a long time, but I don't think as fans we have enough information to judge the situation properly. Hopefully the shock of loosing Adkins will die down and we can get behind this new manager best we can.

Some quotes from neutral fans that make me laugh:
"The only reason I can see behind their thinking is that Pochettino was a defender and might improve their (so far) usually shoddy defending"
"Appointment is strange too. Not proven at any level of managing. Didn't do well in Espanyol at all. "

Couldn't have put it better myself.

I'm devastated, letterally gutted. Since 1989 I have been watching saints and have seen many managers come and go but never before have I felt we have lost not only a great manager but also a great leader. As you say Adkins was a gentleman and modest, somebody the fans could look up to. His way of dealing with the media was exceptional. Of course he was learning, but learning quickly and I don't see any reason why we couldn't push for top 10 position next season with him. Perhaps as mentioned above Cortese feels we need a big name foreign manager to draw top talent? I don't feel this is the case at all, I think he could have been a top PL manager and potential england manager.

Thank you Nigel for the best 2.5 years as a Saints fan.

I am lost for words and feel so ashamed that our club could treat such a fine decent man so cruelly.

I have nothing more to say as it has left me feeling very sad and I am not sure I will ever be able to forgive Cortese.

Yes, I think this is very much the case on reflection.

The more I think of it the more disbelieving I find it. When Nigel came in they still kept most of the back room staff, like Wilkins, this time round it is completely decimated. I think cortèse has made a very big mistake.

I hate the fact that the official statement was so curt

In reply to ollysaints1 - the transfermarkt stats show we have the 2nd least valuable squad. So in theory yes.

Reading through a lot of these comments, I can't help but feel some of you are ill-equipped for the real world. If you get this upset/angry over a football manager (undeservedly) being sacked, then god knows what you'll be like when you have real problems in your life.

....that nobody wears their team shirt or colours to the Everton game.

We can support our players and encourage our new manager but Nicola will be able to see with his own eyes just how angry we are with him.

I shall be wearing black as today is a very sad day in the history of Southampton FC.

Another football club is going to be very lucky indeed when they sign up our Nigel.

Exactly, punching way above our weight. I'm really struggling to see what Pochettino is going to add and why he is better than Adkins. As usual, Cortese has considered himself to be above giving the supporters a real reason.

If anyone can deal with disappointment it is Nigel. We were his big chance, which he grabbed with both hands...he will soon realise that he now has a reputation and a high profile and is now pretty well off (2 promotion bonuses + 1 Pay Off) and is ready for another good job.

Ha, true enough. I'm fairly upset and annoyed by it but some people take it to ridiculous extremes. Saw this on Twitter earlier:

"It's testament to everything Nigel Adkins is that I feel like someone close has died today #saintsfc"
