But you're attributing logic to football fans. I hardly think MP is going to get support on Monday (unfortunately. I will personally support him 100%).
"@nickgoff79: wont namedrop but someone at Saints told me the chairman is mental & has sacked Adkins twice already then changed his mind the next day.."
When has Cortese let us down before? I think he's earned our trust, and respect. At first I was against the decision, but he has proven time and time again that he is an ambitious man who sees his plans through. I'm convinced he wouldn't have replaced Adkins if he thought it would jeopardise our Premier League status. Welcome, Maurico Pochettino.
Pochettino , welcome . I will support you 100% and hope you will be a great succes for this club . You will never replace NA for me , but you are your own man , now show us what you can do for southampton football club OUR club . UTS !!!
I agree we have no option but to trust Cortese, But the question is what seperates Pochettino from Adkins?
Pochettino is very, very highly rated in Spain. You don't get linked with the Real Madrid job if you're not one of the best.
No matter what people say about MP and his time at Espanyol he did exceptionally well there. I know everyone is concentrating on the fact he left them bottom of La Liga however the more important thing to consider is that he not only saved them from the threat of relegation but got them to a respectable mid table finish. So one difference between NA and MP is that MP has experience saving a club from a top flight relegation. I don't doubt that NA could have done it but thats the risk Cortese is taking. Hope it pays off.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21084201 An interesting sub-plot for Southampton fans is the potential summer arrival of talented Espanyol midfielder Joan Verdu, a creative playmaker widely regarded as the Catalan club's best player. Verdu, 29, is out of contract at the end of the season and has not agreed a new deal, with the club struggling to find funds to pay him as they seek to reduce their debts. A host of clubs across Europe are known to be keen on securing his services for nothing in June. Considering his history with Pochettino, it's fairly safe to add Southampton to that list of suitors.
I know this is irrational but i really do feel we could be waving our Premier league status good bye with this appointment. Nigel had just got things right and the team were fighting for him. It will take an immence character to win over the fans and the team. And unfortunately Pochettino is going to have to do both those things without being able to speak English.
Maybe NC saw the FIFA team of the year and thought that's it we definately need a manager with La Liga experience One thing I'm sure of, a Chelsea style manager-go-round is not gonna be good for the club.
think he can speak english , just not very well , watching him at the press conference he clearly understood at least some of the questions .
From the same article: "One notable aspect of Pochettino's time at Espanyol was his ability to work with young players and integrate them into the first team. More than 20 academy graduates were introduced into senior football under him and, considering Southampton's strong track record in developing youth talent, that's surely one of the qualities that attracted them to Pochettino." This, I think, is quite exciting.
Firstly, again, he can speak English, he just knows better than to use basic English in a press conference and he said as much. Ranieri, Scolari, etc were slaughtered by the media for their poor command of English (although they could communicate what they meant perfectly well) so he's wise to use an interpreter for now. Secondly, the players weren't fighting for Adkins, they were fighting for themselves! The rewards of staying in the PL come directly to them, not through the manager.
Re post #216 Perhaps we have to qualify this a little. If Espanyol had no cash MP would have had little choice but to bring in more of their own academy players. What I do quite like in his interview is he said no need to buy new players - from this I'm hoping MP appreciates the quality of players we already have and plans t work with them. I don't want any QPR style whole new team shake ups.
This guy has the look of Andre Villas Boas about him. Well intentioned and a good manager of his team, but someone with his own ideas and not much experience in implementing them. Fortunately the structure is led from above him and his role is primarily one of leading the first team.
