This fully explains their lack of understanding of football and why they make the decisions. They correlate money with instant success. Any business venture requires many other factors except financial backing but I think football has so many layers again. We've seen plenty good managers given large budgets, sign good players and it hasn't all come together. Time is the factor they are just unwilling to consider and this is one of the prices we have paid with inviting their money into the game.

Exactly. £30 million to a team who was playing in League 1 three seasons ago probably isn't that large a pot! We spent Carroll's money very wisely, but attracting players to Southampton is more difficult, and finding deals like we did is harder still... And for all that money, we only brought in about 4 quality players... Southampton had to rebuild a first team to successfully compete.

I feel that they've really failed to learn the lesson they received when they were relegated last time. Spending beyond your means and expecting success can go spectacularly wayward, and made them implode to the point where Pardew had to play the kids every week because they had few senior players, thus there second relegation! But once again, they see the £70 million they could get for staying in the league and throw the manager away if they don't look like achieving it with sufficient flair!

Sad rated him as a good English manager. Southampton played some nice football under him.

    Cisse, Cabaye, Santon, Ba etc?

Their wages and transfer fees etc account for a significant percentage of £35 million.

plus the much needed new training pitch. Apparently everything Freddie left us was in bits and had to be gradually built up to PL standard.
I even remember the team training at Durham for a while.

You Academy upgrading doesn't come cheap either, nor back-up/youth personnel to fill the ranks while they're evolving this side. To be fair, in that time we've also received money from TV etc, but I'm led to believe we're also paying back the owner's interest free loan which got this whole process started <ok>

Erm. Cabaye/Nolan, Enrique/Santon, Barton/Ba. We have got to a state of profitability by swapping - as well you know - high-salaries for lower, but have not done so by net spending. Thus the money for Carroll has ONLY been invested in Cisse, which in my book gives a new profit of around £25m. Even if Cisse has an inflated wage - not by much, coming from Freiburg, believe me - at worst we're talking £22m profit, are we not? I am still patiently awaiting reinvestment of the money. Even in this window, Ba for Debuchy has been the only movement. Net cost? -£2m, so yet again the balance sheet comes ahead of the football pitch.

Good point, but in the other posts we've added in the other things which the club desperately needs to become sustainable and retain some realistic longevity and you have your answer... I don't see him profiteering, especially considering he took on quite a financial weight when he bought the club and it went down... Interest free loan has got to be paid back at some point, probably easier to sell a club that owes nothing to it's former owner anyway, so no matter what your stance on Ashley, that's a good thing.

I fear for their safety now seeing as they've appointed an Argentinian manager with no knowledge of English football. He was the guy who fouled M.Owen and gave the penalty away when they played Argentina. (Mauricio Pochettino )

Unfortunately though, surely this is the owners prerogative? I know we would like to see the club as ours but in the real world I think we all know its his club as far as any accounting goes. He is owed money which he will want repaid and he has decided that the best way to do that is player sales and slow progression. To get his money he'll know he needs to invest a little. This 35m Carroll money questioning pops up regular, but that is his money essentially. He will want to reinvest as little of that as possible (regardless what their press releases may say to placate fans)

#=Worryingly, this makes me think that the dreadful duo of Ashley and Llambias are about to make the axe fall on Pardew, as a sort of sympathetic reaction.

he teNigel Adkins did a truly incredible job at Saints - How many managers get back to back promotions ending up in the PL? <yikes>

I know Lambert did it with Norwich, but it really is an incredible achievment.

I think the Saints board have made a massive mistake - fair enough the expensive signings Adkins made haven't really worked out yet, but to get the team playing well after a difficult start is amazing management. They are above us now and looking like they are playing for their manager... well, they were! <doh>

Awful decision to sack Adkins. What did they genuinely expect this season?

They are on the back of a 5 match unbeaten run in the league, including points vs Chelsea, Arsenal, Stoke away and a win at Villa. I'd love NUFC to be in that kind of form right now.

This will put real pressure on them now. Not that I want to see their club go down, but you have to hope that ridiculous decisions like this backfire on the dimwit owners.
