Very harsh and out of the blue given recent form. They've excelled under Adkins to get this far but with the rewards at stake the board have obviously felt the risk was worth taking.

Just popped to Saints board and they're not happy with Cortese

Bonkers - utterly bonkers. They have a deluded Board that have ideas above their station. As a newly promoted team unless you want to spend like the big boys you'll do well to stay between mid table and the last three come May, and even then there's no guarantee. Look at QPR.

    Mad decision.

So coming back from two goals down away at Chelsea is a sackable offence? Taking a newly promoted team to 15th is a sackable offence? Absolutely ridiculous.

'Pochettino took charge of Espanyol at the age of 36 in January 2009, and managed a best finish of eighth in La Liga in 2010-11.

He left the club by mutual consent at the end of November 2012, with an overall record of 49 wins from 146 league matches'. he'll do well then ?

Just as the team is getting some momentum behind them they sack their manager. Stranger things have happened though. He could be a great manager and will obviously have contacts in the Spanish League. Time will tell if it is a good move for the Saints.

No offence to Saints fans but of those three I only have a soft spot for Reading. Their fans were fantastic after losing to us in the playoffs & I like McDermot.

If Southampton fell apart and got relegated along with QPR it would be a victory for football clubs that try to to things the right way, i have nothing against these clubs fans but something must be done to stop owners ****ing up the game we all love. The money QPR have spent alone is just crazy and they have been fighting relegation for 2 seasons! i think southampton paid around £11 m for a player this summer, its just barmy and these clubs seem to have learned nothing from the Porthsmouth situation.

Qpr can out bid and pay more wages than Newcastle utd ? crazy stuff Adkins was doing ok at the saints but he has had this hanging over him from day 1 in the prem league, considering he took them from L1 to prem thats some thanks they gave him!!

It will be intresting to see what happens with the Saints but i really think the wheels may well fall off now.

The trouble is the owners walk away and it's the fans who are left to start over again

Yes indeed and eventually the penny will drop with the supporters that there is no quick fix most of the time and all debt is loaded onto the club. Until a few more teams start suffering the same fate as pompy supporters will still think the sugar daddy approach is the only way to glory !

Shocking. He was a doing a great job there and guided them to back to back promotions. even worse to appoint an unknown. like evryone else here I hope they go down now. I know a few saints fans (used to live dahn sarf) and of the 2 I've spoken with they are gutted and astonished.
    Shame on the soton board!

KJ have a look how much Adkins spent pre season. he spent more on transfer fees than Hughes did. still think he was moving them in the right direction.

    Maybe not in wages though.

To be fair there's only £3m in it and Southampton are better placed in the league.
As you mentioned already the wages aren't accounted for which makes a huge difference, QPR are offering more money than Newcastle in wages despite their stadium being less than half the size.
Also QPR had a championship squad for years where soton had to improve a league 1 squad to championship standard then Championship to Prem in 2 years.

    That's my take.

You must have met nicer ones than me KJ. I was in a pub watching the playoff finals surrounded by reading fans. Thankfully there were 2 Norwich fans there to show solidarity! :D
