Unlike most fans, it seems, I'm willing to give him a chance. This from Sid Lowe, who knows Spanish football: "Re: Southampton. Pochettino is, in my opinion, a very good manager indeed." Guillem Balague, who knows Spanish football, and Pochettino: "Ive seen Pochettino work at Espanyol. His commitment, his style, how he deals with youth, tactics. If I was a Southampton fan Id be excited" He was seriously linked to Real Madrid last year, he's a coup for a club like us. Cortese obviously saw a chance to get a better manager in and took it, in the same way he's trying to get better players in. He's a good fit, he promotes good football and is good at bringing youth players through to the first team. I'm sorry to see Adkins go but this could be an exciting development if Pochettino is given a chance.
The only way he can win me over is if we finish in the top half of the table this season. If we get relegated he can get the **** out of this country.
Really? That's the only way? So you'd be unhappy if we finished 15th and then won the title next year?
I agree PTF that of course we should give him a chance and of course he could end up being a very good manager for us. However, I cannot support the decision itself and I fear that he won't actually be given a chance by the vast majority of fans who will be vitriolic (think Benitez at Chelsea to the power of 10) against him. Damned either way unfortunately, at least for the foreseeable. God only knows what the players think.
Feel sorry for you lot , your new manager got sacked as he was bottom of la liga. Has a win ratio of 33%.
Can he even speak english because if he cant then i dont care if he is the re birth of Jose he will only drag us down
Fine I'll rephrase it. The only way I'll accept him is if we easily avoid relegation this season and get into Europe next season.
Don't blame the new manager and, for Saints sake, I want him to do well, but I enjoyed watching Saints under Adkins and enjoyed watching Adkins. I remember that when Adkins was asked if he ever felt down, he said, 'Yes, for half an hour.' Just realised we won't hear any more Adkinisms...very sad. Nigel will bounce back...he will know that SFC gave him a chance to step up, now he will go on and be good for someone else. Watch your backs any manager in a job, Nigel is on the loose.
The players are professional and will do their jobs. And as I've already said elsewhere, if the fans made the decisions Adkins would never have been appointed. Is that what you were expecting from Adkins?
The trouble is, even if we'd appointed Guardiola now, it still would feel like a rash, thoughtless and unfair decision. I have NOTHING against Pochettino and will support him wholeheartedly as he's the manager of Southampton Football Club. However, I feel shamed by Southampton Football Club today.
Seems like the guy can't even speak English lol. There is a press conference at 2.30pm with Mauricio Pochettino... and a translater. At least we can get some Spanish players in and he'll be able to speak to them. Maybe the sacking has something to do with the understanding between Ramirez and the Saints manager.
We don't know its a rash decision. Do you think Cortese woke up this morning and decided to sack Adkins & then appoint Pochetttino?
Fair comment. Perhaps Adkins is a special case, he's certainly very charismatic and I know a lot of fans, including myself, took him to our hearts, but if a loved player like Lambert or Lallana was replaced by someone more reputable, I don't think people would mind nearly as much. This outpouring of grief from most fans is quite hard for me to understand. For me nothing has changed, we are still in the same position, we have the same players; only time will tell if this is a good or bad move, and I'm prepared to wait before I cast judgement.
Anyone slating Pochettino is an idiot. He has done nothing wrong and should have our full support. If you are angry about Adkins sacking, which i am, then vent your anger towards Cortese as he is responisible. Not Pochettino, we need to back him in order to help him achieve a good league position.
Perhaps not perfectly, but he can speak English: http://www.skysports.com/video/inline/0,,13991_7521848,00.html I can well understand why he feels a need for an interpretor in such a high-pressure press conference. And he used to watch Smith and Jones, how bad can he be?
We will probably never know. Just like with Pardew. Bottom line is NC thinks it's for the good of the club. He used Nigel to get us here and he thinks this guy can take us to the next level. I hope he's right!
