Oh man, he's a nutter. This from the guardian's review of la liga 2009:

"The Benny Hinn award for religion really paying off: Goes to Espanyol and their coach Mauricio Pochettino. With 10 weeks left, Espanyol were bottom on 22 points, eight from safety, having won four times all season. It was going to take a miracle for them to survive, so Pochettino asked for one. He hiked 12km to Montserrat, pleaded with the Virgin to save his team and, lo!, she did. Ten games and eight wins later, Espanyol finished 10th."

I suppose at least he has a track record of saving a team from relegation. But this kind of religious management style doesn't work well over here, just look at Scolari. He used religion to motivate players with great success in Brazil and Portugal, then failed miserably to apply the same methods at Chelsea.

I know we're called 'saints' but really. I'd rather stick with Adkins' modern evidence-based methods thanks.

Having said that, something about Balague's tweet doesn't add up. Would he really consider Southampton a dream job?

If Adkins is sacked, saints will not have another penny off of me for many years, and I will probably stop following football for a while. He's the best thing that has happened to this club in my 22 years as a saints fan.

I'm disproportionately worried about this considering how incredibly likely it is that it's complete bullshit. My head says it's ridiculous but I still have a worried feeling in the pit of my stomach.

I just want to see Nigel's smiling face with his arm around Forren's shoulder whilst they hold up a shirt together. :(

Is it really a dream come true for Mauricio Pochettino to manage Southampton though. A bit of a weird dream.

Balague is a life long Espanyol fan, now I'm very worried.

Pochettino was sacked by Espanyol leaving them in last position at the end of November. Maybe his relegation-avoiding credentials aren't all that. Javier Aguirre has taken them up to 16th since.

At least he speaks a bit of English, contrary to Nixon's assertion.

All odds on Adkins to go have just been slashed by the bookies with him now as favourite to go by a mile. 1/5 with stan James!

Please don't let this happen. The team will be detroyed. We need any manager to love the type of football that we do. Can't even bear to listen to a foreign manager stumble through a pre-match talk...even some who have been here years can't speak English properly.

I feel dirty just reading this thread. If any of this has the slightest ring of truth then NC is not the man I thought. And I just can't consider that.
To replace NA & think it would work, well that wouldn't be some sort of religious divine intervention, it would scream mental illness.

This is pure unadulterated internet bull****ting at its best.

Ok, slight note of optimism, he was linked to Real Madrid about a year ago, maybe he's better than I thought: http://www.skysports.com/video/inline/0,,13991_7521848,00.html

Still think losing Adkins would be a bad move though.

    Come on, that's stupid.
