Skids into the valley single. never mind the bollocks album. HMV and the chains in ways are responsible for the demise of stores like revolver rival etc and making hight steeets duller. Sad peole will lose but maybe this could mean more independant record stores in the gap. big is not always best.
Led Zepplin and Hawkwind wow you have gone up tenfold in my opinion of you now! I saw Hawkwind in Glastonbury first ever lazer show. And Mr Plant lived up in Trelleck not far from me, bet you still listen to Floyd And Banksy I remember having Mr Blue Sky by ELO so my memory is starting to come back to me
The clothes shop was called Paradise Garage, bought a bit of gear in there and in heroes on Union street. Happy days... I can remember buying a vinyl single in that record shop of Dancing queen for my sisters birthday..
I worked at Sun Life Assurance, on the opposite side of the road to Devon Savouries for 18 years from 1977 onwards
I saw hawkwind & Zepplin at Cardiff Castle back in the 70s......Wow!! Liked early stuff of Pink Floyd and also Wishbone Ash!! Remember them..lol Used to get a load of my records in a big corner shop in Bedminster, can't remember what it's called now!
Did you ever play for their footie team in the Bristol Insurance League? I worked for Phoenix Assurance on Redcliffe Hill (now the Mercure Hotel) and then Nat West Insurance Services until 1980. You never know, we may have crossed swords so to speak!
"Blimey Banksy - impressive memory mate!" Bizarre really but I cant remember the scores from the Xmas games now though
It never ceases to amaze me how many Jitters and greasers we get on this forum Wiz will be out in a minute with his Teddy boy get up on!! View attachment teddy boy.jpg
HMV like most of the chains is just a bit rubbish. Good at nothing while trying to do everything but sadly having a big negative effect on the smaller indie shops now virtually all brown bread. Revolver was the soul of much before high rates and chains. Record, clothing, tickets, fanzines [Bristol City aswell] and social centre where the owners [running their own record labels] did it for lurve and made you cups of tea even if you didn't spend anything, or had purple hair like a mental rooster. Now??? Record stores are ****. Its like question of sport without Botham and Beaumont. Just not the same.
The first album I bought was from a record shop next door to Maggs opposite the triangle in Clifton,I was crazy about 'The West Coast Sound and surfing music,The album was by a band called 'Dick Dale and the Deltones',Dick Dale was called ' The King of Surf '...They were closely followed by Jan and Dean and Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys.....God I loved that West Coast Surfing sound.... First single I bought was CanCan '62 by Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers - a band like Sounds Incorporated who had a line-up including sax and toured with many artistes as the backing group. Cost 6/8. Used to shop in old Woolworths in Broadmead...got Little Stevie Wonder's 'Fingertips' there on Oriole. Also used to go to MHE (Modern Home Electrics) up the Gloucester Road where you could find bargain s/h records. There was also a great record shop in Picton Street where you could get labels like Sue, early Island and American Soul/Blues/Rhythm'n'Blues records.
Reliant - I played for several of the Sun Life teams in different leagues, and in their Sunday team too, and Phoenix were certainly opponents I remember along with Dolphin Showers, and Bristol & West. I also played for Westside Utd in Whitchurch.
Angel and Reliant are you both still in the insurance game now? The reason I ask is that is my wife's market and she used to work for the Royal in Bristol, but is now in Cardiff working for a broker. I know that you all in that industry tend to know each other.
