Between Facebook, Twitter, Daily Fail articles and various other sites, I must have seen close to 20 people (1 or 2 may be the same people under different names I realise) calling for the Allams to get the "cheque book out otherwise we'll drop down the league", "go get Billy Sharp/Louis Saha/Jack Butland" or "prove their support by spending some money". I can only assume:- 1) they've f'ing idiots 2) they've forgotten that we've just committed to in the region of £5m on Brady and Meyler and spent a few million in the summer 3) they spend too much time on Fifa/Pro Evo 4) they're f'ing idiots Billy Sharp can't pay for anyone other Forest or Southampton this year due to Fifa Regs, Jack Butland is going to the Prem if he leaves Birmingham and Louis Saha is NEVER going to drop down to the Championship, never mind to City. If FC is still available at the end of the window, we may try and get him but it'll be either in a cut price deal or, more likely on loan. Likewise, the keeper will be Stocks on loan provided that Fulham get a new keeper - we sure as hell won't be paying millions for an untested keeper. Gambling on what might be is a thing of the past for City. If we get promoted, then yes, we'll turn loans for Elmo (who will be on his way back shortly) and Stocks into permanents, but anyone who thinks that we'll be spending another few million this window needs to put the crack pipe down, leave the green fairy alone and get back to reality
I think they also forget the millions and millions they have put a side to save us. The fact that our wage bill is huge, what we spent in the summer and the up and coming changes to financial rules due to the Football League. Brilliant post may i add.
There are too many people who conveniently forget that Meyler, Brady and Proshwitz cost over 6 mil!!! Have also seen comments in the wake of Elmo going back criticising the signings of Meyler and Brady despite the signings being made tostop the exact same situation. 6 mil is big money in the Championship, people banging on about cheque book out are indeed ******ed
They'll be doing exactly the same thing if we went up and all. They can't just expect Bruce to click his fingers and the Allams to give him unlimited resources. We knew this situation with Elmo and it's unfortunately cost us a decent player. I really hope we don't get Bruce Out chants starting up if results start going the wrong way.
I don't get this. Are we saying we don't want to sign anyone else then? Personally, I'm fed up of being the only club with mega rich owners who don't spend money. We've had to make do with everyone else's rejects or gambles which have paid off since we got relegated. It'd be great to even just once go out and sign someone who everyone wants and is envious of us for when we get him. Brady and Meyler was a good start and those deals needed doing, but they aren't going to get us promoted. Only new players will do that and it's pointless being content with an alright season when we've got the option of a ****ing good one.
We can't afford to spend, with our wage budget and with our owners. Our owners aren't mega rich i.e Cardiff and Leicester we can't compete in their league at times. I agree we need to make signings but players like DJ Campbell who are proven at this level would do a job, a very good job, but most peopel want us to spend fortunes when there are bargain options out there. People also think just because Aluko came free he's on no wages etc... They forget Brady and Meyler will be on large wages, we have a squad of players on first team wages as most where signed as first team players. Our outgoings are huge, ingoings not so huge.
They dont have to get out the Check Book if they dont want to. If they want us to go up they will need to. Cardiff are probably bidding for Campbell because we need a striker. Nothing like taking a target away from your closest opponant. We need Elmo = 2 Million Campbell = 1 Million - Whatever Cardiff are planning on bidding Aluko Replacement = 1 Million Goalie = 1 - 2 Million I dont see us getting any amazing loans as we have heard no rumors of any. I think we will have to buy and I dont see anyway that we do not leave January with a better squad than we had a couple weeks ago unless they spend at least 5 million. Can we go up if we dont spend? Yes. If you think that it is going to be easy to stay in the top 6 without spending a bunch of money I cant agree with you any less. I am not being unreasonable or over reactive. It is simple math, perhaps my evaluation is off on the amount for each player but the idea is correct.
I may be a conspiracy theorist, but I find it very hard to believe that some of the news in the past 24 hours isn't related. As a club, we've hardly been quiet about the fact we have money to spend - the Allams have even suggested their pockets are capacious enough to fund the building of a new stadium. O'Neill tested the water by threatening to recall Meyler - we bit. Meyler signed, and Sunderland now have funds heading their way. Last night we lost our main source of goals - and the very next day - Elmo is recalled, and the media is alerted that one of our biggest promotion rivals are interested in our biggest target in Campbell. How many people have suggested that we could try and grab Elmo and Campbell in a joint deal? Now maybe the timing with the Aluko injury is a stretch too far - but I cannot believe that the Elmo recall and the Campbell story are unrelated. To bring this back on topic - I think the reason for the "Cheque Book Out" comment is probably the Allams own fault. If you show you've got money - people will demand it. It's obvious how much we need promotion this year, and our behaviour in the transfer market (suggestions that inflated prices for Proschwitz and Quinn were published for example) has shown are owners will let the money flow if given a hard enough poke. If this is the case, you can hardly blame Sunderland for their methods to boost their own funds, nor really can you blame some fans for expecting them to do what they already have.
this is the last window before the new regs come in .. we will speand .. and a few of you will be surprised
Look at the bottom 5 teams in the PL. Newcastle Wigan Aston Villa Reading QPR. Personally I think that if we do not go up, going up next season will be harder than it will be this year. Not to mention the possible loss of Chester that lots of us think will happen if we dont go up. The owners have repeatedly said that we need to go up this season to balance the books and for the long term health of the club. The Check Book has to come out if they meant that.
Are the regs only on new signings dazed? I misunderstood them - I thought they were based on your general turnover - making a profit/loss. If that's the case we may be signing now - but we could face another firesale in the summer.
This is actually spot on. Unfortunately, we need to spend. If the Allam's have £100 odd million to spend on a bloody sports village, they MUST have £5mill to spend on a £60 - 90million incoming if the club go up! Squeaky-bum time, we need to do some wheeling and dealing in my opinion.
It's a shame that the club has never managed to bring through many players through the ranks, thats what I think when I see calls to the owners to splash out. Keeping Cooper and even giving him a decent run in the team would have been a nice start, then maybe selling Chester could have been a possibility instead of suicide now if it happens.
Don't forget that to an extent the "money" is not "spent", it's invested. Brady is 20. He "cost" £2m. in two years time he my be worth £5m. Or £nothing. The skill (and we're relying here on Steve Bruce) is in buying cheap and selling expensive. I think we will, and my guess is that the Allams also have faith in SB to increase their investment value.
