Poor tony is still only a teenager and it cannot be easy for him to know how
To deal with the media. If footballers want to maximise their earning potential
most people claim they need to become expert with the media. Funny enough one
Of Alec Ferguson babes, has done very well for him with no media ability but he
made up for it by marrying well, Posh.

How many times has a Champions League player admitted he knew nothing of us, and how many times have we took this as a slight?

The link to the story doesn't work any more so I haven't actually read it, but from the general jist of the conversation it seems to be a pile of ****e <whistle>

Think that's the general consensus but it doesn't stop the media from trying to stir things up as ever!

Listen Espaniacelt. Of course it's a non story, but what can we expect from MSM, no
matter how much they try to paint up the new club, Sevco, they cannot get good news
for Charlie and Ally, so the media try to create a bad news story for Celtic to keep
The masses of Huns happy.

Didn't see a lot wrong with his comments. How many know much about Romanian football and Steau. Didn't think he said anything wrong. Wonder what anyone else would have said differently.

No, Pud. Less is less.

(To suggest otherwise undermines my whole belief system and makes me sad. Desist.)

Yes, although you could have added another P towards the end of the word - hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia - and made it even funnier still, theoretically.

I suppose so.

Apologies are good, I like them. I do prefer if they actually mean something, though, and a prerequisite for this is that they feel necessary to give in the first place.

It may be too late, however, if my expert scanning of today's Romanian newspapers is anything to go by.....

Or, from the slightly more downmarket Duminica Sport: Watt Tony Mâncat de Hamster Meu. (Which should be self-explanatory....)

... or from the even more downmarket 'Zilnic Înregistrare':- 'Celtic starr Watt până la lui uxters in exportul ilegal de Hampsters pentru a-si satisface depravate gusturile'

Interestingly it seems that apologies or rather the use of the words 'I'm sorry'/'Lo siento' is used sparingly in Spain (or used to be anyway) and as a general rule only when it is sincerely meant which to some extent makes we Spaniards appear slightly off-hand at times whereas, in the UK, it seems to me, that the phrase is over-used to the extent that it has almost lost any genuine feeling.

The story was taken down, for some reason, but this is what it said:

Celtic have apologised to Romanian giants Steaua Bucharest after teenage striker Tony Watt said he knew nothing about the former European champions apart from their name.

Ahead of a friendly match between the teams on Tuesday, 19-year-old Watt spoke to Romanian television channel Dolce Sport.

However the rising star of Celtic Park and the Scotland Under-21 national team caused a bit of a furore with his lack of knowledge of the opponents.

Asked by the Romanian reporter if he thought it was an honour for Steaua to face Celtic, he said: “They are playing against one of the biggest clubs in the world and we’ve proved it by getting to the last 16 of the Champions League.”

Watt was then asked about his knowledge of the 1986 European Cup winners but admitted he knew little about the 23-times Romanian champions, or the game in the country.

He said: “I know the name and that’s about it. I know they’re a big European club and they have good history.

“Obviously everyone knows who Steaua Bucharest are.

“I think Mutu might be a Romanian, that’s about all I know about Romanian football.”

Despite the seemingly innocuous comments the reaction from the Steaua camp saw Celtic quickly make an apology.

A spokesman for the Glasgow club said: “We apologise and regret Tony Watt’s statements about Steaua.

“Our club does not agree with such statements made against other teams.”

And there we have it, Dev, a considerable fuss over nothing. (I think it's pretty unreasonable to expect someone as young as Tony Watt to negotiate such diplomacies on the hoof.)

I can't understand why Celtic felt the need to apologise, it's not as if Tony was talking about Rangers.

Don't bother, i'm fluent in Romanian so allow me.

'Celtic starr Watt până la lui uxters in exportul ilegal de Hampsters pentru a-si satisface depravate gusturile'

Roughly translated:

"Celtic Star Tony Watt is up to his oxters in Hamster **** for dissing - with much fervour - a venerable footballing institution"

Well done Dev. You have ably demonstrated that you can match the level of ability shown by many of today's 'journalists' -the Daily Record will greatly admire your ability to spin a storyline and undoubtedly will wish to sign you up soon. <whistle>

Too late, I’m afraid, although I appreciate your effort, for sure.

I ran EspaniaCelt’s lewd Romanian outburst through Google Translate and was presented with the following higgledy translation: Celtic starr Watt's up to the illegal export of Hampsters uxters in order to satisfy the depraved tastes.

I start to suspect that Espania’s Romanian may not be up to scratch.

When I put my own polished effort through Google Translate - Watt Tony își bate joc de cultura țiganilor: toți românii sunt hoți și bastarzi și toți Celtic jucătorii sunt rasiști mândri. Am disprețuiesc Steaua București, el zambete batjocoritoare, nu că l-am auzit de ei - I was rewarded with the far more coherent: Tony Watt mocks Gypsy culture: all Romanians are thieves and bastards and all the Celtic players are proud racists. I despise Steaua Bucharest, he sneers, not that I've heard of them.

I’ve got Romanian pretty much wrapped up, to be honest. It’s been a productive day. Well done for being a polyglot, Dev. (Espania - raise your game.)

I agree. This [observation] feels perceptive and wise.

(If you add persistent despair into the mix, you could almost be me. Word.)
