I don't think we need a director of football, but we do need a better head scout. An experienced, proven scout with a good track record. Unfortunately I thought we had that in Comolli until he ****ed up.
You can't make this decision yet imo. Rodgers needs the summer, if we fail next summer then undoubtedly yes but Rodgers needs to have at least 1 fair crack at the transfer whip
I think we need some sort of figurehead but not sure if DOF is the right thing. tbh I don't really know what DOF does because if you look at wiki, for instance, it's a jack of all trades role. They seem to be responsible for everything except managing the team! Bobby Charlton has a role at utd that isn't dof but more of ambassador like the role they invented for Kenny. I don't know exactly what Charlton does but his presence as a respected ex-player adds to the image of utd as someone fans can relate to as a constant at times like when the Glazers took over.
I voted yes - because this club is very inexperienced from top to bottom. We need a real football man in charge. I don't want to see Ian Ayre come out and start talking about the types of players we want to bring in etc etc. I expect Ian to be bringing in the commercial revenue and working on the stadium - ultimately, he should be signing the cheques! A real football man, with a proven track record - Van Gaal, Cryuff as examples - they have the right philosophies which would be in line with the whole ethos of the club and more importantly, with Rodgers. Having such an experienced figure would help us attract players and personnel IMO. The LFC name/brand is fading with each year we fail to reach the CL and failure to challenge for the title. Throwing stupid money is the only other way to attact top quality but we're not likely to be doing that (rightfully). Having star names like Gerrard, Suarez and a high profile DoF would help.
Yes we need one. Someone in the club who knows what a good ****ing player is would be nice! All of our staff are clueless.
Unless the role of a DOF is well entrenched in the culture of a club then you are probably better off not having one and finding another way of sharing the playing staff strategy. NB I'm talking here about a long term strategy inside of which the Manager has control of the tactics. DOF is always going to be a political role as there will always be a dynamic between the DOF and the Manager as well as between the DOF and the executive. Therefore I an more inclined, as far as LFC are concerned, to dismiss the DOF role. However, I would like to know morw about the Panel idea floated on Rodger's arrival.
Wasn't that effectively what DC was though? A chief scout? He and his scouting network found players that fit the criteria required for the team and presented them to the manager who had the final say. He just did the negotiating too
How would the fans relate to Van Gaal or Cryuff? Wouldn't that just be like a player signing and they would be off to another club with the next good offer. I would say Dalglish but he's had several roles now and he should just remain as the legend that he is without taking on something else - he could go back to his ambassador role because I think they owe him at least that. We need someone like John Barnes. Who loves the club, talks sense especially in the heated controversies we've had in the past. He understands the club and the fans and what the fans want and where the club should be. He could work with Rodgers and the academy and come up with some sort of blueprint for success which incorporates method of play (whether that's to be the Barcelonaesque tiki taka or not!) or whatever is deemed necessary.
I am open to some kind of group. A scout like you all describe is needed. We have Rodgers in charge of the first team. Rodolfo Borrel is the academy technical director. Ayre is in charge of the money. After that we need some one who links all of that together, talks to potential new targets etc. Or they need to have weekly metings and communicate perminantly. Rodgers need to communicate what the squad needs, especially the priorities, as well as players he already knows and would like to look at. The scout needs to hear this from Rodgers and report back his findings. Ian Ayre needs to make sure they know budgets, wage bills etc. Borrel needs to make sure Rodgers and the scout know what he has coming through and who he has high hopes for. Rodgers and the scout need to go and visit the academy to see it for themselves. I these meetings some one must act as chairmen. I think this should be Rodgers. I thought we were waiting for the two head scouts from City's gardening leave to end so that they can join.
It might sound very sad but in this day and age we also need a Commercial Director in there to evaluate the costs and off-field income that a new player could generate
I was associating that job with Ian Ayre. How about we put Steven Gerrard into some kind of recruitment role when he retires. I cant see him as a manager.
Trouble is Ayre is an accountant by trade and his position is MD. He really does not have the background to properly evaluate the commercial consequences. Also as MD he should be chairing the group and can't truly do that if he is also inputting.
