So your happy for people like Dickson and Chaplow etc to just sit and do nothing for their wages? Even tho they are way down the pecking order?. I'm not ,Dickson was even moaning about not being given a free transfer a few months back. He is ok for Saints to pay his contract up , but not happy to just walk?. That in my book is greedy.

I have no legal knowledge at all, and may be talking out of my hat, but if a Player has a contract, he can't simply walk out.

He can ask for a mutual consent termination of his contract(less money), or just ask if his contract can be ripped up. The thing that has annoyed me most is his moaning. Then you have Chaplow who is basically in the same position, who hasn't moaned or slagged of the club. All he has said is he will have to look at his future.

OK to take either of those two options would have been foolish, and he has a right to moan a little bit as he is a footballer who wants to play football, I would have thought with the 25 senior player rule, there should have been a proper release facility for those that lost out. Not charity, just a fair deal.

If you want to terminate a contract, you have to offer something. Dickson has to prove it would be in Saints interest to do so by reducing his demands. Otherwise, Saints might as well pay for a few months and hope they can sell him for something. Cortese is known to be 'slightly' stubborn<whistle>, but can also listen (as in Puncheon's case).

That's what mutual consent termination is, if he is unhappy here why stay?. If he wants first team football when he has been told he isn't in the plans why stay?. Only one reason isn't there ?.

If he is staying because of the money (which I understand), he should stop moaning and sit it out. You can't win with NC by talking to all and sundry. That's the strange thing about Nicola...as a pure businessman he perhaps should make some kind of deal, but he likes to win (even if in the end he loses).

I've never seen Targett play but I can confidently say that nobody knows if he will become a first team regular. We have people talking about him being better at some things than Shaw and maybe turning him into a winger etc... all conjecture until people have seen him play multiple games for the first team.

Something like 95% of our youth players will play below Premier League level. I (used to) hear the same praise of Jack Stephens yet when I saw him pre-season against Wolves he was awful.

The u21s now play their home games at the Silverlake, so hopefully one or two posters will feed back.

I think this view of him is somewhat exaggerated. Having said that I can't really see the sense in demanding nominal transfer fees for players like Dickson rather than releasing them.

Think it's been very quiet unless you are Fat Sam! He must spend the whole window on his mobile. I'm going to back Sunderland tomorrow cos he can't have had time to take training:wink:

The thing with Chaplow is that I can imagine he is still a pretty useful guy to have about the place. Every team has a couple of players in their squad who are very unlikely to make the team sheet on match day. The key is having these players as positive influences, who push the regular 1st team players hard in training and Chaplow has always come across as the professional type to me.

That's a very good point!

Fair point, but I think Chaplow's on his way to be honest. Adkins' comments after the cup game against Leeds suggest he's run out of patience with players like him.

Mells turned down Chelski to come here :)

To elaborate a little more for others...

Mells was actually at Chelsea, and then got to the stage of being offered a pro-deal. Chelsea offered him one, as did Saints.

I remember reading something where his father said Southampton would be a far better footballing option and give his son a far better education too.

So he turned down Chelsea, who he had been with to date - and signed for Southampton.

The thing about excess players is that, apart from the money, they take up time that Adkins can't spare. He needs to concentrate on the main players. Every extra player involves him in conversations (especially tiring if they are unhappy). If you have to deal with people, you will know that every one will think his problems are of utmost importance. And players who got us promoted deserve care and respect...perhaps even Adkin's good humour is being stretched.
