Brilliant, one the greatest planes ever and the pilots who flew them are all Hereos.
Even if you can't see it as soon as you hear those engines you know the Spitfire.

Those Merlin engines send a shiver down my spine. Just imagine if you were a German pilot and out of the cloud pops a Spitfire on your tail.. I'd just bail out straight away.
I still see them as the most graceful plane I've ever seen. A true joy to behold.

ACS - the original Mustangs (P51) that the americans sent over had an allison engine in them and they were a pretty ordinary fighter/bomber then someone had the idea to bang a merlin in them and they became another iconic plane of the war - the new engine allowed them to increase their ceiling so they could escort the high alltitude bombers and they were as fast as anything

Sorry mate. Will have to agree to disagree on this point.
As fantastic as they were, for me, the most graceful plane was the Wellington or the Lancaster.

There's just something about the big lumbering hulk hanging there majestically in the air.

Probably reminds me of myself, that's why I like them

I remember that. The Cadillac of the sky. Recently made famous by the red tails film I believe.

The lanc and the Mosquito would be my second and third. Although I do have a slight leaning towards the ME109

Would have been a very interesting time to live, agree that it would be my pick too.Always loved the spitfire since having a die cast "britains" model with working propeller as a kid. Some iconic planes in those days, agree with the Lancaster and Hurricane and who can forget 633 squadron mosquito and many others, boulton paul defiant maybe or Wellington or the flying boat Sunderland lol.

I know for a fact had I been around at the time of World War 2, I'd have been one of the ones shot almost immediately having just got off the ground/back of the boat/lorry (possibly friendly fire too <laugh>)... But there is something intensely romantic about a time period of upheaval where men fight for good. One of my favourite films was "Reach for the Sky". My grandad used to watch it with me every other weekend. He himself was trying to be a Lancaster bomber pilot but was dismissed because he had a gammy leg... His affinity for them stayed with him because he was a fantastic painter and when he died we were left with a crate of oil paintings of Lancasters bombing the bejesus out of stuff!

Men were gentlemen, ladies were valiant... All the same, I'm glad I can't go back in a time machine! DT's in this lifetime, so I wouldn't choose any period other than the present <ok>

A group of archaeologists, historians and scientists have admitted defeat in a mystery which has spanned decades.

After just over a month of digging for lost World War Two Spitfire planes in Burma they have concluded that none exists.

"No Spitfires were delivered in crates and buried at RAF Mingaladon (in Burma) during 1945 and 1946," a statement from the company funding the search read.

Rather than discovering the iconic World War Two planes, the team uncovered evidence which suggested that it would have been impossible to have buried them.
