Lewis Carroll got the idea for the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland from a statue in St Mary's Church in Beverley.

Winifred Holtby, authoress of "South Riding" a Fictional story which was actually set in the East Riding. It was recently darmatised on the TV. It's set in the 20's or 30's as was Miss Holtby (Who was from Hull).
My three were all born in Hull - Johnson, MacKaill and Whitfield. All became famous after leaving Hull. Mackaill ran away as a teenager before ultimately reaching the USA to begin her acting career.
