While I agree Ade has not been nearly as good this year and last, I think both that he's improving and that the team has been better with him in it that it was with Dempsey. Ade at 75% is still a good target man. Dempsey at 100% isn't, even though he's been scoring more. I hope he'll continue to improve, but as it stands I'd rather have Ade, then Gylfi.

The Club can confirm that Emmanuel Adebayor has been called up by the Togo FA for the forthcoming African Cup of Nations.
The striker will be available for this weekend's fixture against Queens Park Rangers before travelling out to South Africa to meet up with his international teammates ahead of the championships.

  3. Well, Togo are in a group with Ivory Coast, Tunisia and Algeria, so it is doubtful that they will qualify. That would bring in back in time for West Brom away on 03/02. Here's hoping, anyway!!

Something is up, IMO. Who says they aren't going, Is adamant about it for months, and then goes at such short notice? Saturday could well be his last game for us I reckon.

  5. :emoticon-0159-musicDoo-doo, doo-doo:emoticon-0159-music Conspiracy theories abound!! <monster> haha

You might be right Roo, but you can imagine that there is quite a lot of pressure on him to go - the recent history (shooting etc) and his general reputation in Togo (charity work etc). The fact that he is remaining available for Saturday doesn't suggest a quick getaway to me.

Togo is the latest of a number of reasons to be annoyed with Ade this year. But I'm not taking the bait. The team with Ade in it looked very good and had a record to match. Ade looked effective in his role. As long as that continues to be the case, I don't care how many he scores this year.

I'm hoping we'll manage well without him and be even better when he comes back. 20 goal a year PL strikers are rare, big name striker busts are common, and losing faith with Ade at this point doesn't seem wise at all, and is always something of a self-fulfilling choice on the part of the fans.

2007-08 season and that is the only time in his career he has scored 20 league goals a season.

However talking of 20 goal-a-year strikers, Michael Owen never exceed 20 league goals in his career, nor has Defoe!

Lol no one mate! Just me being skeptical as usual. I just think it's all a bit weird and a bit short notice. Seems a bit out of order to me. I could well be exaggerating a bit, but as I've said before I think he was only signed permanently so we didn't have too many changes with VDV and modric going in the summer. Like I also said, if the acons were this time last year when he was starting every week as one of our star men, I don't think he would have left. If we don't sign Damiao or another striker, we will obviously keep him. If we do have another striker lined up, I see him being allowed to leave. Could well be wrong though. Like usual. <laugh>

Owen and defoe hardly benchmarks of quality though! Defoe looks like his breakthrough season comes at 30. Ade hasn't played the same game as last year. He looks more lacklustre on the ball at times but he also seems to work more for the team; runs out wide and pressing etc. As long as our results with him in the team stay strong, I'm okay with him scoring less. But he could do with putting some of those sitters away, however hard he works off the ball.
Ade is all about confidence. ACON might be good for him. He's a big character, the main man for Togo. Could do him the world of good. A run of games and some goal scoring form. Let's not write him off yet. Nor can I see him leaving! He wouldn't be playing this weekend if that were the case.

Nah you're thinking along the right path, as I too thought "he's only off as he's having a crap season", as lets be honest, if Arry was still here and Ade was the main man and enjoying his football, then he wouldn't have gone and from the outset under Villas Boas his position in the squad has always looked second best, rather then last season when he was our main striker.

However, who would buy him? Levy struck a great deal with City, but I doubt we can just sell him and another club will take over the contract of paying half his wages? so I expect him to be here for at least another year.

Agree, plus Ade has not had much of a run in the team this season for one reason or another. Too early to write him off IMO and he is a quality player of the type we are all hoping to sign in the window. Let's not forget we already have one and not allow our familiarity with him to devalue the potential contribution he can make with nearly half a season to go.

Agreed, signing Damiao would mean for the first time in years we have a potential title winning leading line. 3 top class strikers; form dependant. And all with something different to offer, all pushing each other. Things could be looking really good at WHL for years to come. Of course, we do still need to sign the 3rd. So i'll just continue to count my chickens well before they've hatched in my little bubble.

The Damiao boat has surely sailed... We've been linked with him every window for three years now and nothing even remotely concrete has ever emerged.

I wouldn't read too much in to the Adebayor - Togo debacle. He refused to play for them due to security concerns, now he has been sufficiently reassured that these concerns have been resolved. It's annoying, but not the end of the world, it's hardly like he is our talisman this season as he was to an extent last year. I get the feeling we're just going to have to write off this season for him and try to start again next year, irritating as if he/City/Levy hadn't all been so greedy over his transfer we might have actually got a few months out of him August-December...

There's been some rumours recently linking him to Juventus, for some reason.
They're supposed to be in talks with Llorente, but that seems to be dragging, so perhaps he's their Plan B?
