Magpies boss Alan Pardew has identified Remy as his preferred replacement for Demba Ba, who left Tyneside to join Chelsea earlier this month.

Pardew is believed to face competition from Bundesliga sides Schalke and Borussia Dortmund to secure the signature of the France international, but according to Baup, Remy could just as likely stay at the Stade Velodrome until the end of the season.

"For a year, every transfer window, we have been talking about his departure," Baup told La Provence. "But he is still there. Maybe he still will be in the summer."

It was rumoured that Remy had travelled to the north east earlier this week ahead of a medical, but that was disproved when he was confirmed in the Marseille squad that travelled to Morocco for a training camp.

The 26-year-old played in OM's 2-1 win over Guingamp in the Coupe de France on Sunday before he travelled to Marrakech for a three-day training programme as part of a 21-strong squad ahead of the resumption of Ligue 1 this weekend.
As well as playing down Remy's potential departure, Baup also dismissed claims the striker is being negatively affected by the constant speculation about his future.

Baup said: "As this is the third transfer window where we are talking about his departure, he does not focus on it.

"He seeks primarily to regain his touch. The physical side, he has found. He must now partner that with the co-ordination of movements and feeling of the game."

Seems like a non-story to me, but thought I'd see what you all think of it.

Thing is it's also being reported today that Remy may hold off making a decision until nearer the end of the window in order to understand all his possible options.
Maybe just idle paper talk, but if true, absolutely no good to us. If this move has any mileage in it at all, Remy should be given a deadline in which to commit and get this move done, or we look elsewhere and quick.
What we cannot do is lose ground or time and risk ending up with no one.
Those cynics amongst us may be thinking that's exactly the plan we have, l sincerely hope not.

I don't think MA isstupid enough to not want us to sign a striker, which means there will be a Plan B.

The difficulty arises when Plan B is really not nearly as good as Plan A, and you still hope Plan A may come off. It can be hard to decide when to give up on what you want in favour of what you'll reluctantlhy be stuck with, and how long to postpone committing to either.

I'm actually a new-breed of super-cynic. We think that not only will we not be signing anyone this window to replace Ba, but that we won't actually receive a replacement until Mrs Ameobi hatches another little starlet... Furthermore, to get her "warmed-up" for the approaching procedure(/gift from the footballing gods), Mike has sent her his infamous stripping pics via instagram...

We also don't believe Derek Lambias exists, and remain suspicious of the penguin as a species.

Isn't Remy already plan B at best?

De Jong was supposed to be plan A this summer...

Story of my life Freddd lol, but l know what you mean. I guess if Remy really wanted this move, it would be in the bag by now. Just thinking of the speed at which Sturridge moved to LFC and has played for them already, as an example. Same to some extent this time round with Debuchy, slightly protracted, but done.
Maybe l just don't understand all the ins and outs, but still think if all concerned want it, then it would be done by now.

I don't know alot about Remy, but I was never keen on de Jong - - a lot of money for unproven talent

Yep, a lot of money... Money which will have to be accounted for if we end up signing nobody else this window... We were seriously trying to get Debuchy and De Jong (up to £12 million wasn't it?) in during the summer. Missing out is understandable. However, considering the struggles and lack of personnel, that 12 million pounds must at least be spent on a forward, there's enough of them out there. That's before we even get to the Demba Ba replacement issue as well...

We'll know a lot about our owner, manager, and the patience of the fans by Feb 1st that's for sure.

Thought he went for £14 million, but maybe that was Euro's.

I was less annoyed about failure to sign a striker over the summer (we still had double Dembas) than a FB and CB. The last, especially, verged on crim neg.

With only one Demba, though, we will be taking an almighty gamble on Cisse (form and health) if we don't sign a senior striker, and the CB situation has done nothing to move out of the crim neg category.
