QUOTE Broomfield previously worked with Redknapp at Portsmouth and Tottenham, where he was in charge of scouting operations. âIâve worked closely with Harry for a number of years now, so itâs great to link up with him again,â he told the clubâs official website, www.qpr.co.uk. âA scouting job is 24/7 and Iâve never really had a break for 25 years, but I left Spurs in September and Iâm refreshed and looking forward to working back in football. âThe opportunity to work with Harry again was ideal. âWhen I spoke to the hierarchy at the club about the plans they have to take QPR forward, it sounded like the kind of project I wanted to be part of.â UNQUOTE Well, at least he's bought into QPR's big plans. Now find some good players that will...
Nothing to do with the wedge of cash then... I'd be more interested in his history of bringing in new sources of (untapped) talent... anyone?
He deserves a lot of credit for recomending Sandro to us. I remember when we were first linked to him Tim Vickery, the Beeb's S.American football reporter, wasn't so sure about the deal but £8mill looks like a bargain now. I think he did a lot of work for us out in South America, in fact. Other than the South American players we've been linked with it's hard to tell who he was recommending that we sign. It looks like Remy was one of them though as the link with the player appears to followed him and 'Arry across to West London but I think we got off lucky not spending the £15mill they were asking for last January. I'm sure he's a good scout but I would add a note of caution about him being a mate of 'Arry. I think it helped us to have 'Arry and Levy often disagreeing over transfer targets. Some 'Arry's buying is very short termist, for example Palacios, Keane and Crouch were all bought for a lot of money but were all discarded by Redknapp within 18 months of signing them, which is probably why Levy took a more hands on approach with transfers again. As long as Fernandes is prepared to say 'no' and doesn't just sign the cheques for Broomfield and 'Arry I think they'll do really well for you
Cheers for the background info - hoping 'arry has some useful background info of his own to help us on Saturday!
Doubt any new recruits by then - we'll just have to do a Bradford job on Spurs. We will definitely require all hands on deck, no slackers - hopefully not all hands manning the pumps!
Good post, YV - I'm hoping that after the Hughes debacle, Tony Fernandes is more sceptical about proposed purchases. Less fan, more cynical auditor may pay dividends
Yeah, exactly it's down to the chaiman and his board. Us Spurs fans found ourselves defending 'Arry time and time again because other teams' fans blamed 'Arry for the financial problems at clubs once he'd left. The fact is, not even Portsmouth was his fault, he's a manager not a businessman, he doesn't know what clubs can and can't afford he just knows what he wants to improve the team. The men at the club who should've been looking after the money clearly did their job very badly and despite Redknapp improving Portsmouth dramatically and winning them the FA Cup they still couldn't afford the wages. That's not to mention how Johnson and Diarra(who cost less than £10mill combined) selling for about £18mill each, Harry if anything helped them stay up for longer. Staying up this season really is the massive hurdle to overcome, if you do that and you keep hold of 'Arry I don't think you'll be in relegation battles at the end of the season anymore. Fernandes will have to remember he's holding the reigns but the sooner 'Arry can get rid of the deadwood and get in some more of his style players the better.
