A coupla months ago I went to a reserve game at Ferriby. Look North were there doing vox pop interviews. It was at the time when season ticket prices were publicised and city's tickets were reported to be most expensive. The remit was clearly to have a dig at Tigers. I was asked, "Do you think Hull City's prices are too high?" I replied, "No, they are very reasonable. 210 quid for 23 games is brilliant value." Then they asked, "Do you think the players are paid too much?" Thinking of one or two who should remain nameless I replied, "Far too high for some of the dross we've got." My 30 second interview was shown on the tv thus: "Do you think Hull City's prices are too high?" and my reply? : "Far too high for some of the dross we've got." Somehow the wages question got lost
What do you expect ? Your previous answer was boring. As you say, Dont trust the media. Twisting words is what they do.
It was boring to Look North - they wanted controversy - my 3 other mates who gave a 'wrong' answer were not used. And I was adjusted to fit the agenda.
In all seriousness, you could complain to the PCC about that. They used your answer to a different question they asked on air. That breaks all kinds of rules. Who was it - Simon Clark?
I've no idea who it was - it was dark - and I don't really 'do' Look North or Radio Humberside - have respect for Burnsie but he's the only one I'd recognise
I'm guessing it was about time that the new season ticket prices came out. There was that controversy about disabled prices and carers having to pay. Also about the time that Barmby had been sacked and we all wondered who the next manager was going to be and how many players we would lose and supporters were openly saying that they might not renew and that the club was arrogant to our wants. Also there was the whole stadium bllx rumbling on. It was the zeitgeist of the period to have a go at the owners and the local media was stoking the flames nicely. I was a guilty of giving the Allams pelters myself - and will eat humble pie as it's been an upward curve since then. UTT
Cool My background is in the media (BBC) and I teach media production. If what you say is absolutely correct then you should write to both Ofcom (who now oversee some of the complaints to the BBC) and to David Holdsworth head of BBC Regions. This is a serious breach of editorial conduct and control and you should report it. You at least should write to the editor of Look North and copy it to David Jennings (who is Head BBC Regional and Local Programmes). [email protected] I have met him a few times and he's really ok. More importantly he will treat this very seriously. If you don't get a response email your letter to the BBC Trust.
They were clearly going to have a News Story on how Hull City's tickets are ridiculously high and when you said they weren't, they needed to ask another so that they could get the answer they need. It's not trusting the Media, it's more understanding how they work. I always say no to Television interviews. I've been on Radio Humberside a couple of times when Burnsy has stopped people walking by, but that's about it. I used to be a trainee journalist, but never made the cut so I have quite a grudge against the Media...
The media - as you know Amber - is much more than news journalism. Anyway, I wouldn't worry about not making the cut, they are just starting to cull undergraduate Journalism courses in universities in both UK and the US, so you'll have the last laugh. I'm a fan of BBC journalism (I've done news but didn't train as a journo) by and large it is still the best. However, what I hate the most are journos making themselves the story (breaking the first rule). I detest that and it's become an increasing habit in my my view. Rant over, I'll get off my soapbox now... Mussie will be along any minute now...he sniffs this stuff a mile off! Oh and finally, finally Cool OLM is right... just say **** and they won't bother you again! (ever)
No there's a difference in this case if the story is accurately relayed. They can ask the same question a different way to get the answer they want but to have the voice overdubbed asking a different question to the one he answered is unethical.
There is a lot to take in account when dealing with the Media entirely, there's no dodging that. I was actually in training for BBC Sport Journalism for this region and they explained to me that the Undergraduate Courses they've now brought in, was the reason they were cutting me, and a few others off because they needed "Younger people who could take a more modern and cultural approach to the Sports within East Yorkshire." Hence the reason I do the Match Previews on here, it gives me some time to do a lot of typing and get across some of my talents in regards to typing and analysing. I'd thought about doing a couple of Articles but there are some total dimwits on Not606 who'd just comment with abuse or bullshit.
I know G very well OLM, he's sort of likeable in very small doses - but not in front of a microphone! I hate the whole false winding up/devil's advocate shoite. It doesn't work unless the caller's hard of thinking...
Thanks for all the positive input - but I'm a peace loving hippy - I just learned a lesson from it all - and I wonder how many other 'stories' are 'crafted' similarly.
Sorry I am sort of drifitng O/T but Amber, have you thought of doing sport stuff for community radio perhaps? Ed Sault - currently on BBC LN started out doing bulletins on the Community Station I set up. At least if you get abuse you can't hear it!
Might have to review my opinion of you here Lincoln.... I also know Gollum very well and the thing that struck me immediately - other than his physical, ahem attributes - was that he was exactly in real life as he is on the radio. "Im right, you're wrong, listen to me, you're talking nonsense, yeah, yeah, YEAH...." (repeat ad nauseum). And before any smart arse says anything about him talking sense with these particular comments, they werent directed at me....
