Is a cup final ref a celebrity...............Stan Coultas ,think it was the Man Utd v Aston Villa final about 58 without looking it up.
The Frehlings? Didn't think there was a connection. John Andrews was his name. Max married someone I was at school with, she was from North Cave too
Saw Paul Heaton at a gig in Cambridge late last year. Between two songs he did this little monologue about how he kept hearing that Cambridge was flat and boring and then announced "but if you wanted somewhere really flat and really boring you couldn't beat Hull". "Bit like your singing then" was my heckle.
Never knew that about Get Carter and the setting for Jack's Return Home. Part of my induction week at Newcastle Uni was a tour around some of the locations where the movie was made. It really was that depressing. It was a good movie, except I good never get passed the fact that Carter was supposed to be a Newcastle native and Michael Caine did his best (& only) Sarf Landan accent. Surely a person's accent doesn't change that much? He hadn't been away that long according to the story.
Here's another 3 names who were born in Hull. Gerald Thomas - (Film Director) He directed all the Carry On films. His brother Ralph (also a Film Director). He directed a lot of films in the 50's and 60's. Francis Durbridge (Writer) He created the character Paul Temple.
Yep know what you mean about the accent thing...... The author, Ted Lewis, spent time in Barton and also went college in Hull - so that's another celebrity with a connection to the area ! Interestingly, the last scene in the book takes place in a disused quarry which is now the site of the Far Ings Nature Reserve on the south bank. Well, interesting if you like that sort of thing !!
Yes my Dad went to school in Barton with the author Ted Lewis and the book was set in this area but they obviously thought Newcastle seemed more realistic to have gangster types!
Frodo Baggins and the Hobbits. Tolkein got the inspiration for lord of the Rings after he and his wife spent some time in Holderness. ...and if we're having characters, Led Dawsons stage persona was born after his previous act format got a really rough ride in Hull clubs.
I always understood it was the Phoenix (?) Club, which was on Hessle Road - demolished for the dualling between Daltry Street flyover and the roundabout at the end of South Ferensway.
Reece Shearsmith of League of Gentlemen fame is from Hull. I'll always remember the infamous cameo in Max and Paddy's RTN, when he sang "The First Cut is the Deepest." Big fan of his work. Surprised nobody mentioned Will Atkinson, he's a boyhood Hull City fan.
Don't know if this has been mentioned but Tracy Seaward is from Hull. She was the film producer of The Queen staring Helen Mirren.
Eleanor Tomlinson, who seems to be following a Keira Knightley type path into the movies, is from Beverley, got a lot of films due to be released yet with the likes of Ewan Mcgregor, Johnny Depp. Could be the areas biggest star in the future.
this bloke was interesting http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...t-and-most-secretive-British-tycoon-ever.html
